He was born 1 Jun 1876 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to farmer Austin "Buggy" Peay (1844-1898) and Cornelia Frances Leavell (1846-1880). He married Sallie Hurst and they had two children: Amaryllis Peay and Austin Peay V.[1]
He died on 2 Oct 1927 while at the Governor's Residence in Nashville, Tennessee due to a brain hemorrhage, the first Governor to die in office. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Tennessee.[1]
The four year university Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Clarksville, Tennessee is named for him. Incidentally the mascot of APSU is the Governor.
