--- EARLY SCHOOL TEACHER DIES AT AGE OF 73 --- Mrs. Alexander Boyd Succumbs Following Three Weeks’ Illness. --- WAS INSTRUCTOR 10 YEARS --- Held Position When many Pupils Were not provided With desks --- Mrs. Alexander Boyd, 19 Hamilton street, aged nearly 73 years, a resident of Muskegon for half a century and one of the earliest teachers in the city public schools, died at her home last night at 10 o’clock following an illness of about three weeks duration.

Mrs. Boyd came to Muskegon in April 1863, and taught school for about ten years. She taught in the old central building which was afterwards removed and remodeled into the old L.G. Mason residence.

Had No Regular Courses

The schools at that time were graded but did not have any regular course. Mrs. Boyd taught the third grade then which included students all the way from 10 to 14 years of age. When Mrs. Boyd first took the position she had as many as 60 and 65 pupils in a small room which did not at first even have desks.

In October 1872, Mrs. Boyd, whose maiden name was Miss Helen M. Peck, was married to Alexander Boyd who died about 10 months ago.

Mrs. Boyd was born at Dover, N.J., October 15, 1841, being almost 73 years of age at the time of her death. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Howard Goff, who has made her home with her mother, caring for her while ill, one sister, Mrs. J. F. Farge of Greenville, Mich.; and one brother, W. H. Peck of Rodney, Mich.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the residence. Rev. Archibald Hadden, pastor of the First Congregational church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in evergreen cemetery. ^[6] ---
