Biography

Census

In 1850, Catharine Gillespey, age 65, born in Pennsylvania, was enumerated as the head of the household in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana. Her real estate valued at $4,000. Also in her household were Leah Gillispey, age 25, born in Ohio, and James Gillespey, age 28, farmer, born in Ohio.[1]

In 1860, Catharine Gillespie, age 75, born in Pennsylvania, was enumerated as the head of the household in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana, and she engaged in farming. Her estate valued at $7,500 and her personal estate valued at $200. Also in her household were James Gillespie, age 36, farmer, born in Ohio, William Peck, age 36, butcher, born in Kentucky, Margaret A. Peck, age 26, housekeeper, born in Kentucky, Elizabeth Peck, age 12, born in Kentucky, John Peck, age 10, born in Kentucky, and Mary Peck, age 8, born in Kentucky.[2]

Burial

Catherine Gillispie was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana.[3]

Obituary

"Obituary - Died on Monday, February 10, 1868 at her residence in Greencastle, Indiana Mrs. Catharine Gillespey (maiden name Peck)...born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1784. At the age of five years in company with her parents she moved to across the Allegheny and down the Ohio river in a flat boat and settled in Mason county, Kentucky and from there to Flemming county...She was married in 1805 to James Gillespey of Harrison County, Kentucky. From Fleming County she and husband moved to Clinton County, Ohio...In 1826, she was called to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father leaving her the charge of nine children...In the following year her affliction was renewed by the death of two daughters...She decided to move to Indiana in 1828. Again it pleased Providence to take away her eldest son Daniel well known to the older citizens of Putnam County. In 1849 she sustained the further trial of the loss of her daughter Mary J. Stevenson wife of Dr. A. C. Stevenson of Putnam county this state. She lived forty two years a widow.."

Probate Records

In the name of God, Amen I Catharine Gillespy widow of the coutny of Putnam in the State of Indiana being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of life and being desirous to dispose of my real estate in a particular manner I do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void any and all other wills by me heretofore at any time made

First I desire that my first debts (if any) [illegible] my funeral expenses shall be fully paid out of my estate

Second In consideration of the services rendered to me by my son James Gillispy and my daughter Leah Lynch since they respectively attained their majority. I give to them and to their heirs all my rights title interest and claim in and to the track of land upon which I now reside lying west of the town Greencastle, Indiana and containing about seventy acres more or less and all my right title and interest as aforesaid in and to the forty acre tract of land lying above Greencastle in said county not far from Springer's Mill on Big Walnut it being the same tract deeded by Westley Clark to my so[n] Daniel Gillespy deceased to be by them and their heirs held and enjoyed forever. The residue of my estate (if any) may remain after my decease is to be divided among all my children equally or in case of death of any then to the heirs of such deceased child in addition to advancement heretofore made to each of my children.

Third, I hereby appointe Delano R Eckels Esq. my Executor to this my last will and testament and request that he shall take upon himself the discharge of the duties of the trust.

In witness of all which I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this the ninth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty

Be it remembered, That on the 18th day of February 1868 Delano R. Eckels and Benj. F Hays two of the subscribing witnesses to the within and foregoing last Will and Testament of Catharine Gillespy late of said County deceased personally appeared before me Henry C. Priest Clerk of the court of common Pleas of Putnam county in the state of Indiana and being duly sworn by the Clerk of said court upon their oaths declared and testified as follows that is to say that on the 9th day of October 1860 they saw the said Catharine Gillespie sign her name to said instrument in writing as and for her last Will and Testament and that these deponents at the same time heard the said Catharine Gillespie dec[l]are the said instrument in writing to be her last Will and Testament and that the said instrument in writing was at the same time at the request of the said Catharine Gillespie and with her consent attested and subscribed by the said deponents Dorsey O. Elliot and Henry W. Daniels in the presence of said testaor and in the presence of each other as subscrbing witness thereto and that the said Catharine Gillespie was at the time of the sign[ing] and subscribing of said instrument in writing as aforesaid of full age that is more than twenty oen years of age and of sound and disposing mind and memory and not under any coercion or restraint as the said deponents verily believe and futher deponents say not

Hays two o the subscribing witnesses thereto; that a complete record of said Will and of the testimony of the said Eckels and Hays in proof thereof has been by me duly made and recorded in Book 1 at page 506 of the Records of Wills of said County

In attestation whereof I have hereunto subscribe my name and affixed the seal of said Court at Greencastle this 18th day of February 1868
