Biography

A hand written death record was found for a Halterman female (the first name or initials were illegible) who was 89 years, 4 months and 1 day old (making her birth date about 27 February 1790), unmarried, and had died of old age on 26 June 1879 at musser's cr, Lewis County, West Virginia. She was born in Virginia, her parents unknown, but the informant of the death was S. White her son-in-law.[1]

A second death record, also hand written was found for Sarak (SaraK?) Halterman, age 81, widowed, born in Virginia, her parents born in Germany, died of dysentery in July of 1879 at Freeman's Creek, Lewis County, West Virginia, and had been a resident of Lewis County for 6 years. The attending physician was recorded as Bland and Musser.[2]

Find a Grave reported she was born on 25 March 1790 in Pendleton County, and died on 25 July 1879 at Freemansburg, Lewis County, West Virginia. The bio recorded "Buried on private land. Gravestone present and legible." A short bio reported she was married to Adam Halterman, was the mother of Catherine Halterman White and included links to her parents, Garret and Margaret Peck. No sources for this information were given.[3]

Sarah appears in the census reports as being born in Virginia (more specifically Pendleton County in the 1850 census) in about 1790. In the 1870 census her father was noted as foreign born, and both parents were recorded as born in Germany in the first death record above. Her father Garret Peck was recorded as born in the Colony of Virginia and the Province of South Carolina. Never the less, she was a daughter Garrett Peck Sr and Margaret (Unknown) Peck. She married Adam Halterman on 24 Jan 1813 in Pendleton County, Virginia. [4] Oren F. Morton's "A History of Highland County, Virginia" also recorded their marriage date as 1813.[5] They had at least six children together.

Sarah Pecke was likely the female age 16-26 in the household of Margret Pecke at Pendleton County, Virginia for the 1810 U.S. Census. [6]

On 23 February 1811 in St. Clair County, Illinois, Abraham Varner and Elizabeth (Peck) Varner of St. Clair County, Illinois Territory granted power of attorney to Margaret Peck (Waggy) of Pendleton County, Virginia, for the sale of a portion of land in Pendleton County on Strait Creek which was previously owned by Garrett Peck (who died intestate), to Adam Halterman (husband of Sarah Peck). The deed was recorded on 6 July 1813 at Pendleton County, Virginia. The deed named the thirteen children of Garret Peck: Michael, John, Jacob, Henry, Daniel and Garrett Peck, Mary Peck (Pickle), Elizabeth Peck (Varner), Margaret Peck (Waggy), Susannah Peck (Keister), Rachael Peck (Hevener), Catharine Peck (Click [Cleek]), and Sarah Peck (Halterman).[7]

Sarah Halterman was likely the female age 40-49 in the household of Adam Halterman at Pendleton County, Virginia for the 1830 U.S. Census. [8] Members of their household included:

Adam Halterman did not appear again after 1850.

In 1860 Sarah Halterman was living in the household of her son-in-law John Vandevender, with her daughter Margaret Vandevender and their children. She was recorded as grandmother, 69 years old and born in Virginia.[11]

In 1870 Sarah Halterman was listed in the household of her son-in-law John Van Devender at Monterey Township, Highland County, Virginia. She was recorded as 81 years old, born in Virginia, her father foreign born. She was living with her son-in-law, daughter Margaret (Halterman) Ven Devender and five other family members. [12]
