Note on Adelia's Final Resting Place

After many years of searching for the place of Adelia R. Peckham Fuller's death and burial, Mrs. Rosemary Wiley finally find out. She sent Albertus the following electronic mail in March 2015, which she herself had recently received from Riverside Cemetery in Rochester, New York:
"From: xxx at CityofRochester.gov
To: xxx at hotmail.com
Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2015 11:23:30 -0400
Subject: Adelia Fuller
Dear Ms. Wiley,
Adelia R. Fuller was buried in Section P-2, Grave #240 in our cemetery. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Yolanda Arróniz-Vrooman
Riverside Cemetery Service Representative"
Mrs. Rosemary Wiley received the following letter on 09 Feb 2007 from the local historian in Fredonia, New York:
"... I found James and Adelia with their 6 children in Stockton in the 1860 Census. Then the death of James Fuller on 6 January 1865 at Smithland KY (Civil War illness?) In the 1865 Census 'Addie R. Fuller' 36, born Renssalear (Sp.?) and her 6 children, widow. In the 1870 Census she is still in Pomfret (Adelia R. Fuller, tailoress, with Ellen, 14, Hattie ?, 12, Charles, 10.) Emma H. seems to be called Hattie as she is in the 1875 Census for Pomfret. That has Adelia Fuller, 43, dressmaker; Sarah Buel, daughter, 27, born in Oneida; Eugene Fuller, 22, born in Renss.; Hattie 17, born in Chautauqua; and Charles 15, born in Chautauqua. In the same household is Benjamin Thompson, 29, born in Canada, blacksmith and Ella Thompson, 19, born in Renss. and John Buel 11/12 (11 months old) Nephew born in Chautauqua. (That must mean he is Benjamin Thompson's nephew. But where is Sarah's husband?) On 17 March 1880 Eugene J. Fuller of Fredonia married Lillie V. Hugaboom of Versailles in Perrysburg. The 1880 Census for Pomfret/Fredonia still has Benjamin Thompson, 35, blacksmith and Ella Thompson, 24, and in their household Charles Fuller, Groom in stable. The 1880 Census for Sheridan shows Eugene, 27 farm laborer and his wife Lyllie V., 17. For Plainfield, Otsego County the 1880 Census has Adelia Fuller, 52 and Hattie, 21. The 1900 Census for Plainfield has Adelia Fuller, born July 1827, living alone. She and her father were both born in NY State. Her mother was born in Connecticut. Is this the right Adelia ? If it is, then she may have died in Plainfield not in Fredonia. Doug"
We now know for sure that Adelia R. Peckham Fuller died in Rochester on 7 March 1909. [19]

Sources

  1. Research of Mrs. Joan Lee (Fuller) Ramsey. Note: According to the estimate of Mrs. Joan Fuller Ramsey, Adelia Rebecca Peckham was born in 1828, which would make her 18 years old when married. The birth year 1828 has Adelia born six years before the marriage date of her mother and her father, as given by several genealogical sites. The Census records indicate that Adelia was born in 1829, still five years before her parents' marriage, and which makes her 17 years old upon marriage to James Fuller. - Albertus
  2. LDS FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File [on-line] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/39LJ-TGL?view=basic Text: Child 2: Adelia Rebecca Peckham - gender: female; birth: 1834; Verona, Oneida, NY; death: 7 March 1909; Fredonia, Chautauqua, NY. Note: This file gives Adelia's birth year as 1834, and place as Oneida, NY, in an attempt to make her seem to have been born after the supposed wedding date of her parents; however, this birth date makes her only 14 years old upon the birth of her eldest child! and it does not concord with any of the census records, all of which give her year of birth as abt 1829, and if a place of birth is indicated, it is Rensselaer County, NY. - Albertus
  3. Research of Mrs. Joan Lee (Fuller) Peckham. Note: James L. Fuller and Adelia Rebecca Peckham were married on 10 Sep 1846; one non-primary source says at Quaker Meeting, another says at Congregational church.
  4. Rootsweb [on-line] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~soper/33/27232.htm Note: This genealogical page contains many errors, some of which are obvious: such as, it gives the birth year of Adelia Peckham as 1834 - in contradiction to all known census records, making her only 12 years old when she married James L. Fuller in 1846, and only 14 when she gave birth to her first child. This site - and some others - seem purposely to move Adelia's birth year up to 1834 in order to make it fit in with her presumed mother's - Rosina Crandall's - date of marriage with Samuel Peckham. The supposed first marriage of our Samuel Peckham and one Eleanor M. Allen on 3 Jan 1831, claimed by this site and some others, never happened: there is a confusion of names, for another Samuel Peckham was married to Eleanor, as can be proven from the Census records. The date of this supposed first marriage causes this site and others to have to move up the dates of birth of Adelia Peckham, Hannah Peckham and Aaron Peckham to make all three of them born in or after 1834, supposed date of marriage of Samuel Peckham and Rosina Crandall. All these confused dates of marriage and names of wives only serve to cast doubt upon the true identity of Adelia Peckham's mother. - Albertus
