Peter Madsen was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.
Biography
Peder Madsen was born on April 6, 1824. He was the son of Mads Pedersen and Mette Marie Hansdatter. He was christened on May 2, 1824 in Taulov, Vejle, Denmark.[1]
Peder married Mariane Madsdatter on November 12, 1847 in Bredstrup, Vejle, Denmark.[3] The couple had three children while living in Denmark: Mads,[4] Ane Marie,[5], and Hans.[6] Ane Marie and Hans both died around 1854.[7]
On June 12, 1853, Peder and Mariane were baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.[8][9] In 1854, they emigrated to Utah with their young son Mads.[8] They made the journey across the American west by wagon with the Hans Peter Olsen Company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on October 5, 1854.[10] After arriving in the United States, he usually anglicized his name as Peter.
Peter married a second wife, Johanna Kirstine Andersen, on December 15, 1856 in Salt Lake City, thus entering the practice of plural marriage. He went on to marry Caroline (Knudsdatter) Jensen on April 25, 1860 in Salt Lake City. He then married Wilhelmina (Nielsen) Jorgensen on May 14, 1864 and Lena Johnson on September 2, 1865, both in the Endownment House in Salt Lake City. Peter and his second wife Johanna were later divorced, possibly around 1869.[8]
Peter was made a bishop in the LDS church on October 13, 1877.[11]
In February 1886, Peter was sent on a mission to Hawaii (then called the Sandwich Islands). He returned to Utah on May 20, 1888.[9]
He legally married his fourth wife Wilhemina on September 3, 1893 in Lakeview, Utah, Utah.[12]
He died at 87 years old on August 20, 1911 in Provo, Utah.[13]
