b. 20 Feb 1715/16 (vr) Canterbury bpt 23 July 1738 Canterbury Congregational Church daughter of John Felch and Elizabeth Johnson. John and Hepsibah were members of the Canterbury Congregational Church where their children were baptised.

John became interested in lands on the Susquehanna River in the Wyoming Valley at what is now the present area of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. "The subscribers Inhabatants of Farmingtown Windham Canterbury Plainfield and Volingtown (Voluntown) in several other Towns and all In the Colony of Connectt Humbly Sheweth that whereas there is a Large Quantity of Land Lying upon a River called Suscohannah (Susquehanna) River and also at a Place Calld Quiwomock and that there is no English Inhabatants that Lives on sd Land Nor near thereunto and the Same Lyes about Seventy mills westerly of Dilleway (Delaware) River and as wee sopose within the Charter of the Colony of Connectt and that their is a number of Indians that Lives on or near the Place of Land afor Said who Lays Claim to the Same and wee the Subscribers to the number of one Hundred fifty Persons who are very desirous to Go and Inhabate the afor sd Land . . . dated this ye 29th day of March Anno domino 1753" (The Susquehannah Company Papers Vol I 1750-55 pp. 16-18).

Though the name of John Pellet appears on the list of of subscribers in 1753 there is no record of the Pellet family removing from Connecticut until twenty one years later when in 1774 they settled on Wallenpaupack Creek in present Pike County, Pennsylvania. The entire party consisted of several families. John Pellet was nearly sixty years of age and accompanied sons William and John, William being married with children. We have no record if Hepsibah made the journey or had died previously in Connecticut. It is uncertain if they were headed for the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania where several hundred families were residing on what was then the frontier or decided on settlement at Wallenpaupack, having made prior arrangements to settle there. The Indian trail by which the first settlers from Connecticut reached the Wyoming Valley passed through the Wallenpaupack, westward through CobbÂ’s Gap to the Lackawanna Valley and on to the Susquehanna River and Wyoming Valley. The original settlement at Wallenpaupack in 1774 contained about thirty families. "The Wallenpaupack settlement seems to have been made very independently. They did not derive any title from Connecticut, although it is probable the Connecticut claim led them to this country. They took no pains to obtain any titles from Pennsylvania and purchased no title from the Indians, but simply proceeded on the old theory that title is acquired by the first occupant. They found the beautiful Paupack flats, with a small Indian clearing, and here they located." The tract upon which they settled, contained twelve thousand one hundred and fifty acres and was surveyed 14 Oct 1751 "for the use of the proprietaries of Pennsylvania" called "The Wallenpaupack Manor." Titles to these lands were not secured by the settlers until 1804 and prior to this no deed had been held by an occupant for a single acre. As soon as the settlers located at Wallenpaupack they built a fort for protection, which contained about one acre within the enclosure and a "never-failing" spring of water. From their arrival in 1774 until 1777 they lived in relative peace. During the years 1777 and 1778 the settlers were often harassed by Indians and those loyal to Britain. On 3 July 1778 the battle of Wyoming occurred in which over three hundred settlers were killed by Indians and ButlerÂ’s forces of Loyalists. Preparations were hastily made for departure from the Wallenpaupack and before sunset on 4 July 1778 the entire settlement was on their way to the Delaware River. The Pellet families settled at a location later known as Pellet's Island near Goshen, Orange County, New York. It is related that after a few weeks in their new settlement, John Pellet Jr., Walter Kimble, Charles Forsythe, and Uriah Chapman, Jr., returned to Wallenpaupack to survey any damages. The fort and homes were still standing and they spent several days there harvesting crops and were working on the last farm when Indians surprised them. Except for Uriah Chapman being shot in the arm, they escaped and returned to Goshen, New York. Again in the spring of 1779 five young men went back to the settlement and found their homes still intact and made preparations to make maple sugar. Again, Indians surprised them and the men escaped. No further attempt would be made by the settlers to return for a few years. The following letter from Captain James Bonnel to Captain Westfall shows the condition of affairs in 1782.

Minisink, 31 August, 1782. Dear Sir: "I am exceeding happy to inform you that my scouts, which returned last evening and this morning from Shelolah, Bluminggrove and Laqueway, have made no discoveries of any savages or other Enemies. They inform me, that there is fourteen Houses Standing at Laqueway and that the grass and weeds have grown through the cracks of the Flour, and that they are confident from the appearance of things that there has not been any Enemy there this Summer."

Laqueway (Lackaway) was the Wallenpaupack settlement. It is related that seventeen families of the original settlers returned to the Wallenpaupack in 1783 among them the elder John Pellet and his son John Pellet Jr. John and HepsibahÂ’s son William and his family remained in Orange County, New York and did not return to the Wallenpaupack. John d. 15 Feb 1801 in the 86 year of his age (ts), Bingham Cemetery, Paupack. Hepsibah was living 20 July 1761 in the distribution of her father's estate, but there is no record of her after that date, her date of death and place of interment unknown and as previously stated it is unknown if she accompanied the family to Pennsylvania from Connecticut.

The Wallenpaupack first settled by these hardy pioneers has been changed forever. The farms are all gone and lay under the huge Wallenpaupack Lake which was created when a dam was built and is now a popular recreation resort.

The last three children's baptisms occur before their dates of birth, obviously an error in the church records or the town birth records.

SECOND GENERATION

1. William Pellet b. 17 Aug 1742 m. 17 Aug 1767 Mary Bradford b. 1 Mar 1744 (vr) Canterbury, Connecticut bpt 2 June 1744 (Canterbury Congregational Church) daughter of William Bradford and Mary Cleveland and a descendant of William Bradford of the Mayflower. William and Mary were members of the Congregational Church in Canterbury. They removed in 1774 with other members of the Pellet family to Paupack, Pike County, Pennsylvania and in 1778 they fled eastward to Orange County, New York after the battle of Wyoming and outbreak of Indian hostilities. They settled at a place that later became known as Pellet's Island now in the town of Wayawanda, Orange County, New York near Denton, New York. William Pellet and his family remained in Orange County and did not return to Wallenpaupack with his brother and father in 1783. Enumerated in the town of Goshen, Orange County in 1790 with 4 males of age 16 and upwards, 2 males under age 16, and 4 females. Will of William, farmer, dated 4 Dec 1799 town of Minisink, Orange County, New York named wife, Mary; sons, William and Obadiah; grandchildren, William, Obadiah, Thomas, and John Crane. Will proved 15 Jan 1800.

William Pellet was buried in a cemetery on the heights overlooking the Walkill River. The cemetery was completely undermined in 1956 by the Orange County Sand and Gravel Company. The Orange County Sand and Gravel Company petitioned to have the markers and bodies removed to the Ridgebury Cemetery. Judge Raphael A. Egan ruled on 30 Dec 1955 that "application of the petitioner . . . is hereby granted, and that the remains of the deceased persons enumerated in the petition who have been interred in the cemetery at Pellet's Island, Town of Wayawanda, Orange County, New York, be removed to and reinterred in the Ridgebury Cemetery owned by the Ridgebury Association, a properly kept cemetery in the same town . . ." The order also specified that the petitioner was to bear the expenses of removal. The markers were removed to Ridgebury Cemetery, but the bodies were not and the article disclosing this information appeared in the Middletown Times Herald, July 19, 1956. William's marker is the only one cited in the article, bearing the inscription Dec 21, 1799 aged 87 years. A shovel operator for the excavating firm, John Leinweber, reported he had unearthed the remains of more than forty bodies. "They even missed one of the stones," Mr. Leinweber said, ". . . you can even read the markings on it."

Mary Pellet went to live with her only surviving child, Obadiah at Pellettown, Sussex County, New Jersey and d. 8 June 1829 88y (ts) buried Beemer Meeting House Cemetery, Wantage township, Sussex County, New Jersey.

John Pellet Jr., b. 2 Feb 1748 removed in 1774 from Connecticut with other family members for the Wyoming Valley (present Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania area), but settled on Wallenpaupack Creek in present Pike County, Pennsylvania before reaching the Wyoming Valley. John is related to have served in the American Revolution for the American cause and is related to have participated in a battle on Long Island. The Pellet families remained four years at Wallenpaupack before Indian hostilities during the American Revolution drove them east to Orange County, New York. They settled at a location later known as Pellet's Island near Goshen. It is also related that after a few weeks in their new settlement, John Pellet with some other men, Walter Kimble, Charles Forsythe, and Uriah Chapman, Jr., returned to Wallenpaupack to survey any damages and spent several days there harvesting crops and were working on the last farm when Indians surprised them. Except for Uriah Chapman being shot in the arm, they escaped and returned to Goshen, New York. John Pellet Jr., and his father returned to Wallenpaupack in 1783 after the Revolution and the threat of Indian hostilites had ceased. John m. c. 1788 Nancy Bingham b. 15 Dec 1767 daughter of Hezekiah Bingham and Phebe Boynton who had also removed from Connecticut to Wallenpaupack. The family was enumerated in Wallen Papack Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1790 with 3 males of age 16 and upwards, 2 males under 16 years, and 1 female. Upon the death of his father, John came into the possession of lots 5, 8, 11, and 1/2 of 12. John was a lumberman and farmer. John d. 18 Sept 1838 90y 7m 16d (ts) and Nancy d. 15 Feb 1843 in the 76 year of her age (ts) buried Bingham Cemetery, Paupack, Pennsylvania.

In 1787 Phineas and Elizabeth with their seven children removed from Canterbury, Connecticut to Wallenpaupack, Pennsylvania where her father and brothers had settled several years earlier. Elizabeth d. 1816 buried Bingham Cemetery. Phineas had a marker which became illegible and has been replaced by a marker that reads - "Phineas Lester PVT, Clarks Co. Latimer's Conn Mil. Rev. War."

7. Abigail Pellet b. 12 Dec 1756/7 m. 13 Apr 1783 (Goshen, New York Presbyterian Church record) Benjamin Whitaker. He was perhaps the Benjamin Whitaker who was a son of Richard Whitaker of Orange County, New York. In the battle of Minisink, Benjamin Whitaker was shot through the arm and breast and placed under the shelter of a rock with others, yet he was still able to flee. He reached and crossed the Delaware River, crawled up a hill among the laurel and secreted himself under a fallen tree, when he found he was likely to be overtaken by and Indian on his trail. The twilight rendered all objects indistinct. The Indian got on the tree under which Whitaker lay, and after standing and listening awhile returned, greatly to the relief of the wounded and bleeding man. Whitaker lived many years, resided in Deposit, New York a long time and afterward went back to Orange County, New York where he died. While in Deposit he lived on Manin Street and served as a cobbler. His brother, John, also escaped, after having seven balls shot through his clothes, with but slight flesh wounds.

THIRD GENERATION

8. William Pellet b. 20 Mar 1771 m. 7 Feb 1795 Phebe Meeker b. 20 June 1771. An Orange County, New York deed (G:182) places William Pellet at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York in Nov 1799. Liber 91:301 refers to a mortgage of 1801 naming William Pellet and wife, Phebe. Phebe was the mother of two daughters and died sometime after the birth of the second daughter, 17 May 1800. William m. 13 May 1806 (bible) (2)Mary Corwin b. 4 Mar 1781 (bible) Walkill, Orange County, New York daughter of Daniel Corwin and Anna Hulse. One month after his second marriage William d. 19 June 1806 (bible). Tradition has it that his death resulted in a fall from a horse on a return from Sussex County, New Jersey where he and brother Obadiah had purchased land. He was buried beside his father in the cemetery (now destroyed) at PelletÂ’s Island. Letters of administration (C:182) dated 3 July 1806 on his estate. A petition dated 3 June 1810 for Asenath and Eliza Pellet, minors under 21, by David M. Westcott, their guardian, and Harriet Pellet, also a minor under 21, by Daniel Corwin, her guardian, showeth that the petitioners are seized in fee simple in the right of their father, William Pellet the younger, deceased, each 1/6 part and Obadiah Pellet, yeoman, of Sussex County, New Jersey, 3/6 part of said William Pellet, deceased, owned in his right of the last Will of his father, William Pellet, Elder, deceased. 10. Obadiah Pellet b. 7 June 1775 m. 9 Dec 1797 (Goshen Presbyterian Church record) Mary Crane b. 17 June 1778 perhaps a sister of Benjamin Crane who m. Obadiah's sister, Asenath. Mary d. 22 Mar 1800 buried in the cemetery (now destroyed) at Pellet's Island, Orange County, New York. On 1 May 1801 Obadiah and his brother, William purchased a 600 acre tract of land on a branch of the Walkill River in neighboring Sussex County, New Jersey. At some point Obadiah removed permanently from PelletÂ’s Island in Orange County, New York to neighboring Sussex County, settling in Frankford Township where he and his brother had purchased land. Obadiah m. 18 June 1804 (Sussex County, New Jersey marriage record and First Baptist Church of Wantage record) (2)Charlotte Westbrook b. 30 Nov 1782 (ts) daughter of Richard Westbrook and Mary Wilson of Sussex County. Papakating (later known as Pellettown) was situated in one of the most beautiful valleys in Frankford. It is three miles in length and about two in width. The soil in this valley is exceedingly fertile." In 1807 (corner stone) a home was built, which was torn down in 1862 to make way for another. A grist mill was set up, a blacksmith shop, and even a store in 1812. The site of these activities was known as Pepocotting (became Papakating), after the stream on which they had located, but gradually adopted the name Pellettown. Obadiah added to his earlier purchase and soon acquired vast tracts of real estate in Frankford and Wantage Townships. He became very successful in his business enterprises and owned slaves. Though this is a dark part of our history, it is related that when they were set free, they begged to remain as servants, because of ObadiahÂ’s kindness and consideration. Obadiah was a Congregationalist and perhaps attended the Beemer Meeting House near their residence. Enumerated in Frankford Township in 1830 with 3 males of age 5 and under 10, 2 males of age 10 and under 15, 3 males of age 20 and under 30, 1 male of age 50 and under 60, 2 females of age 15 and under 20, 1 female of age 40 and under 50. Lengthy Will of Obadiah dated 14 Jan 1846 with bequests of large tracts of real estate to his children and the payment of $950 annually to his wife. Obadiah d. 12 May 1849 (ts and Sussex Register, May 19, 1849). Charlotte was enumerated in Frankford Township in 1850 residing with son Richard. Charlotte d. 19 Apr 1854 (ts and Sussex Register, May 20, 1854) Beemer Meeting House Cemetery, Wantage township, Sussex County, New Jersey.

DIED, In Frankford, on the 12th inst, Obadiah Pellet, in the 75th year of his age (New Jersey Herald, May 19, 1849).

Sometime in the late 1830's or very early 1840's they removed to South Bend, Indiana. It is related that Mary wrote home indicating she was homesick. Her father in law, Obadiah Pellet sent William's brother, Stephen to bring the family home when he was twenty one, which evidently was in the year 1841. Stephen found his brother keeping store and remained two weeks preparing to return to Sussex County with the family. William remained to settle business while Mary and her three children accompanied Stephen back to New Jersey. William Pellet was reportedly never heard from again, either beginning a new life or dying enroute to New Jersey. Mary and her two children living in 1850 were enumerated in Frankford Township, Sussex County with property valued at $29,604. When William and Mary's son, Obadiah was in his thirties he set out for South Bend in search of some record of his father, but was unsuccessful and upon his return to New Jersey was stricken with pneumonia at Scranton, Pennsylvania and died. His uncle, Stephen Pellet journeyed to Scranton and returned to New Jersey with his body. This information was in a letter to Judson W. Cook from J. B. Pellet dated 5 Oct 1834. 43. John W. Pellet b. 6 April 1815 m. Sarah Ann Wyker b. 1815 Sussex County, New Jersey the eldest child of Henry Wyker and Mary VanSickle. John, farmer, resided Pellettown, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was bequeathed a total of 336 acres of land in the will of his father, appointed guardian of a niece and nephew, and was one of the three executors of his father's Will dated 14 January 1846 to which was added a codicil 18 April 1848. His father died 12 May 1849 and was buried in the Beemer Meeting House Cemetery near Pellettown. John and Sarah had a son die in March and a daughter die in April of the same year who are buried beside their grandfather. Enumerated in Frankford Township in 1850 with property valued at $12,000. In 1853 a son died who was buried beside his brother and sister. John's mother died 19 April 1854. Seven days after his mother's death, John sold his land in Pellettown and removed with his wife and five children to the central part of Wells township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania where many Sussex County, New Jersey families had settled. In May 1854 John purchased 216 acres of land from William S. Ingals and in July 1857 he purchased 54 acres of land from John F. Gillette. The Pellet farm was located on the main road between Coryland and Mosherville and their dwelling house was on the west side of the road. Their daughter, Mary married in 1854 George W. Noble who resided on the Noble farm situated two farms south of the Pellet farm. John and Sarah Ann perhaps attended the Presbyterian Church at Aspinwall (now Coryland) in Wells township where their eldest son was buried who died in 1860 and in 1863 another son died who was laid to rest beside his elder brother. In 1864 John and Sarah Ann sold the 54 acres to Aranthus Hyatt and in 1865 they sold the farm of 216 acres to Daniel Dalrymple. In 1869 the name of John W. Pellet appears on a list of names of those who contributed money to move the Presbyterian Church at the state line to French Mills (now Mosherville), John contributing $2. At this time the family perhaps attended the church which had been removed to French Mills as it was in closer proximity to their residence. Daughter, Alice died in 1873 and is buried in the Mosherville Cemetery. John and Sarah lost six of their nine children in death before attaining adulthood. Sarah Ann was alive in 1880 when she was enumerated in that year's census, but when she died is unknown. Every possible record has been researched and many individuals contacted. She presumably died sometime in the 1880's or 1890's. John d. 3 July 1892 and is buried in the Mosherville Cemetery. No monument marks his grave or that of his wife. Buried on the same lot is daughter, Alice and son, John A. Pellet and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Davy and John and Mary's daughter, Charlotte who died in 1873. Neither John or Mary have monuments, only Alice and Charlotte.

Monday of this week Mr. and Mrs. Richard W. Pellet of Papakating, celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Charles Wilson, in the Borough of Sussex. The event was quietly observed, their children, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Charlotte Cannon, Mrs. John J. Stanton, and their grand children and great grand children with a few close friends being in attendance and making the day one of pleasure to the aged and highly esteemed couple. Mr. Pellet was the youngest of fourteen children, and was a son of Obadiah Pellet, who owned about 3,000 acres of land in the heart of the Papakating Valley. Each of the children was given a well stocked farm upon starting in life. Mr. Pellet receiving the homestead farm, a familiar place to every traveler of the Deckertown turnpike. Here Mr. and Mrs. Pellet have resided during their sixty years of married life. Mr. Pellet is now in his eighty-fourth year, and Mrs. Pellet, who was the daughter of Captain Peter Dennis of Augusta, is seventy-eight years of age. Both are enjoying the best of health, with every promise of passing more wedding anniversaries than is usually allotted to one in a lifetime (New Jersey Herald, Thursday, April 29, 1909).

Deckertown Items Mrs. Luretta, wife of Halsey Wyker, of this village, was suddenly stricken with an apoplectic fit on Wednesday morning last and died within fifteen minutes after the attack. She was sitting in a chair conversing with a lady friend who had called on her when she suddenly complained of a pain in the head and felt unwell. Scarcely had a minute elapsed before she dropped forward in a state if unconsciously rfom which she never rallied. A physician was immediately summoned, and restoratives were applied, but without avail, and she died without a struggle. Her husband reached the scene just in time to witness her death. Mrs. Wyker's maiden name was Luretta Crane. She was the daughter of the late Obadiah and Susan Crane of this township, and was about 53 years of age. She was one of twelve children, eight of whom survive her. Those living are Andrew R. and Alanson of this vicinity, Obediah Jr., now of Newark; Susan, wife of John Coursen, of Bradford, Pa.; Elmira, widow of Hezekiah Smith, formerly seward of the Sussex County Alms House but who is now dead; Mary, wife of Wm. Vansickle of Delaware, Ohio; Eliza, the present wife of Mahlon Predmore, of Michigan; and Malinda, wife of Henry Decker, who is now stopping at Mr. Wyker's, in this village. Those dead are William; Jane, former wife of Mahlon Predmore (who has married two sisters) and Asenath, who married Hewey Bedell, of Branchville. This family is one of the oldest and most widely connected in this neighborhood. The father, Obediah Crane, married Sarah, sister of Stephen Roy, of this township. He died about twelve years ago, near Wykertown, on the farm where Wm. McDanolds now resides. His widow has since died. Mrs. Wyker was pre-eminently a Christian woman, actively engaged in everything pertaining to the Christian religion, and since her residence in this place has taken an active interest in the welfare and advancement of the Presbyterian church, in which her loss will be severely felt. She was a most excellent lady and was highly esteemed by all who knew her. Mr. Marcus R. Wyker, who is now engaged in business in Delaware, Ohio, is the only son, and to him the loss of his mother is a serious affliction. The funeral took place last Sunday morning at the Presbyterian Church, which was filled to its utmost capacity by the numerous relatives and friends of the deceased. Rev. E. A. Hamilton officiated. Interment at Beemerville Cemetery (Sussex Register, May 8, 1879).

Obadiah Pellet, 3d, Jr., formerly of this county, died at his home at Pompton, NJ on Saturday last, November 15th. Deceased was a son of the late Obadiah Pellet, of Newton, and a grandson of Obadiah Pellet, of Papakating. He was born October 20th, 1828, in Frankford township and was in his 75th year. He was the oldest of four children, all of whom are now dead with the exception of Mrs. Martha J. Armstrong, wife of Thomas Armstrong of this town. The other children were Oakley B. of Chicago, and William, for many years a resident of Newton. He was twice married, his first wife being Emma J., daughter of the late Dr. John
