Biography

Connie was born in 1899 in Clyde, NC. She was a high school teacher for a brief time. She married Joe Childers in October 1919, after he returned from World War I service in June 1919, and they had their first child (Raymond) in 1920.

The 1920 Haywood County, NC Census lists Joseph and Connie as boarders in the home of Tailor Duckett on Beaverdam Road. Joe's occupation is switchman in a wood yard. Duckett is the foreman in the wood yard. Connie is a high school teacher.

The 1930 Haywood County, NC Census lists Joe and Connie living in Clyde with her father Mack Penland and sister Thelma. They have five living children and one deceased (Wilburn). Connie's mother Annie is listed as an inmate in the census of the NC State Hospital for the Insane in Morganton, NC.

The 1940 Census of Haywood County, NC list Connie and Joe living on Star Ridge Road just east of Canton. Living in the home are their children Raymond (19), Frank (18), Mary Jo (17), Ralph (15), Harold (13), Martha (8) and Rubena (7).
