Biography

Welcome Pennington was born January 10, 1823, in Jackson county, Tennessee. In 1845, Welcome married Mahala Moore, born April 11, 1819, in Clay county, Tennessee, a daughter of Garrett L. Moore and Agnes Denton. Welcome and Mahala became the parents of as many as ten children. [1] Welcome and Mahala are found on the United States Census of 1850, living in Jackson county, Tennessee, with three children, Emline, William, and Jane. [2] By 1860, they had seven children, ages 2 to 14: Emlee, William, Jame (sic), Nancy, Agnesse, Greneby and Dunan. [3] On the 1870 Census, there are eight children, ages 4 to 23: Emalin, William, Jenney A., Nancy E., Greenbery, Demmon and Wolford. [4]

Welcome is found on the U.S. Census of 1900, living in Clay county, Tennessee, at the age of 77. Mahala is 81 years old. There is no one else living in the home with them. [5] Welcome died April 6, 1908, at the age of 85 years, in Clay county and is buried in the cemetery named for him. [6] Mahlah (Moore) Pennington, died November 27, 1911, at the age of 92 and is buried with her husband.
