Aaron Pennington BIRTH ABT. 1786 NC DEATH 23 DEC 1861 Harlan Co., KY

Aaron Pennington came from NC at an early age and settled on the head of Cutshin, then called New Harlan, now Leslie Co., KY. Record of death shows his father, Ephriam.

The 1800 Ashe County, North Carolina census lists Aaron's father Ephriam on page 85, line 21, with a family group of:

1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 45+

AARON would have been about 13 at that time and his brother William could have already moved out of the household. To date this is the only family group found which could be AARON with his father EPHRIAM. The female 16-26 is unknown.

He married ANN COLIDRON about 1807 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He appeared on the census of 1810 at Ashe County, North Carolina.

1810 Ashe County, North Carolina Census lists:
A PENNINGTON with a household of:
2 males under 10 (Levi and Henry)
1 male 16-20 (Aaron)
1 female 16-20 (Ann)

This fits with AARON's and ANN's family. He and William Pennington (brother) were on the 1815 tax list of Ashe, North Carolina.

Based on Census Reports and Tax Records it appears Aaron moved from North Carolina to Kentucky between 1815 and 1820.

The Harlan County Tax Records show that AARON was taxes 1821-1827. William Pennington (possible brother listed above) was taxes 1820-1832. Micajah Pennington was taxed in 1824.

AARON is listed in the 1830 Clay County, Kentucky Census with a family group that matches him, ANN, WILLIAM, JESSE, EPHRIAM AARON, SALLY,MALINDA and NANCY.

AARON and ANN appeared on the 1850 Harlan County, Kentucky census # 169- 169 as AARON 63 and ANN 60 with James (age 18) and Sally (age 17 or 19 in VA). It is speculated that this SALLY is SARAH POLLY LEWIS b. 1830 and could have been age 19 at that time).

John Pennington b. 1868 (son of William b. 1828) records in the Diary of Rev. John Dickey on January 20, 1898 indicate the following: His (John's) grandfather AARON PENNINGTON and his wife ANN came to Kentucky from North Carolina and settled at Cutshin which then was called New Harlan. Their children's names he remembered were Levi, Jesse, Henry, William, Ephriam Aaron, James, Nancy and Malinda. He also stated that his grandfather had a brother who came from North Carolina and settled on Poor Fork and that he was the grandfather of Capt. John Pennington of near the mouth of Pond Creek. This would point to Abel being the brother of AARON.

Note: Additional information from this interview indicates AARON's brother may have been Abel II. Ref.1990 Willis Lake Article "More on Abel II" on 20Jan 1898 from Diary of Rev. John Dickey, Arkansas. [2]
