According to census records and civil war records, Thornton Pennington was born about 1836 or 1839. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Combs on 19 Apr 1856 and they had two sons: Poindexter (b. 1857) and Meredith Richard (b. abt 1861). He enlisted as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War on 20 Jul 1862. The US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles of 1861-1865 list him as mustering out on 20 Sep 1863 at Chickamauga, GA. There is, however, an article transcribed from the North Carolina Standard Register on 14 Oct 1863 which lists him as "killed" at the Chickamauga battle. It is likely that he did die then since there don't appear to be any later records for him and his wife remarried sometime between 1870 and 1880.
