JOSHUA PENNINGTON b abt 1790 Lee Co., VA d aft 1878 Johnson Co., KY md NANCY SPARKS, b abt 1795 VA d March 15 1878 Johnson Co., KY. d/o James Sparks and Mary___.
Joshua Pennington and Nancy Sparks became united in marriage in 1815 in Lee County, Virginia. They had at least nine children. Known children are William, Rachel, Levi, Jesse, and Margaret. Possible other children are David, James, and Hiram. Sometime after 1820, Joshua and family left Lee County, VA. and migrated to Floyd County, KY. About the same time, Micajah II, b. 1763 (probably Joshua's father) migrated to Harlan Co., KY. Joshua was in the 1830 Floyd County census and on the tax lists there in October, 1837. The 1840 census shows him with four sons and four daughters. His son, William, would have been married already and the head of his own household. Joshua was shown on the tax rolls of Johnson County in 1844 after it was formed from Floyd, Lawrence and Morgan Counties in 1843. In 1850, he was in Morgan County, KY., with children Levi, Jesse and Margaret still at home. He and his wife, Nancy, were living with son Jesse in the 1860 Johnson County census. He has not been found in the 1870 census.
Joshua made a total of four attempts to get a War of 1812 Veteran Pension, beginning on 22 September, 1852, from Johnson County, KY. He was rejected for lack of required number of days of duty. Sixty days of active duty was the minimum requirement for a pension. In June, 1854, he applied for a pension from Morgan County, KY., and for bounty land on April 12, 1855, stating that he was 59 years old. He was rejected for the pension, but was granted 160 acres of land on Warrant #23284-160-55. It has not been found where or when he took possession of this land. He filed again on June 3, 1871, stating that he was then 79 years old. The results were the same. The pension law was liberalized in 1878 and he filed again from Paintsville, KY., where he lived on Hood's Creek. He was unsuccessful again. When he made both of the last two applications, he was accompanied by his son, Levi with whom he may have been living. He was, by this time, in his mid-eighties.
His wife, Nancy died on 15 March, 1878, while Joshua was still alive in Johnson Co., KY., but he has not been found after that. It is unknown where and when he died. [1]
Both Joshua and Nancy were buried at the Pendleton Cemetery in Morgan County, Kentucky. Due to the Paintsville Lake project graves at Pendleton were relocated out of the project area and most were moved to Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.
