The record transcriptions indicates he was christened on 18 March 1875 in St. Thomas, Eccleston, Lancashire, son of Isaiah and Ann Pennington.[3]
In the 1871 England census, James was listed as newborn, living with his parents and brother John in Windle, Lancashire. His father was a coal miner.[1]
In the 1881 England census, James was living with his parents and siblings in Eccleston, Lancashire. His father was a coal miner.[2]
