Biography

Thomas Pennington was born about 1640 in Accomack County, Virginia. He died about 1702 in Surry County, Virginia. Another possible birth place has been suggested as Isle of Wight County, Colony of Virginia.

Thomas married (1) Sarah George daughter of Col. John George and Jane Cole about 1678 in Surry County, Virginia. Sarah was born about 1645 in Surry County, Virginia. She died 2 after 16 Jan 1694 in Surry County, Virginia.

They had the following children:

F- i- Jane Pennington was born about 1681 in Surry County, Virginia. Jane married Francis Hutchins.

M- ii- Thomas Pennington was born about 1682. He died on 20 Dec 1727.

M- iii- Edward Pennington was born in 1688. He died in 1727/1728.

M- iv- John George Pennington was born in 1691. He died in 1766.

Thomas married (2) Abigail Unknown.

Thomas Pennington, Sr. who left a will in Surry Co., Va, dated 13 Feb 1702, recorded 1703, married Sarah (George) Lewis, the widow of Morgan Lewis who died in 1677/1678. Thomas Pennington and Sarah (George, Lewis) Pennington had three sons, the eldest son named Thomas Pennington, who was born 1682/83. The two younger sons, Edward and John, chose their "uncle" Robert Andrews and their "aunt" Ann (Lewis) Andrews as guardians when their father died. [Note: Robert Andrews and Ann were NOT their real aunt and uncle. Ann was in fact their half sister, and Robert was her husband.]

Thomas Pennington married Abigail _____ when his wife, Sarah died after 1696, just about 5 years before his death. After Thomas Pennington's death in 1701/2 Abigail married _____ Middleton.

It is well documented that the ancestor of the Pennington family in Surry Co., VA. was Thomas Pennington (1640-1701). His father may have been Edward Pennington, but that has not been clearly established. Early records have the name spelled "Pedington". Thomas's marriage to Sarah George is confirmed by the will of Col. John George dated 2 Aug. 1678, wherein he references to his daughter "Sarah Peddington". She first married Morgan Lewis, by whom she had three daughters. Morgan Lewis died in 1677 and since Col. George's will of 1678 refers to his daughter as Sarah Peddington, she must have remarried either late 1677 or early 1678.
