William Pennington was born in Lancashire, England.

William Ephraim Pennington was most probably born in 1595, since it is suggested that he was baptised on 1 Aug 1595 in Wigan, Lancashire, England^[1]. He was the son of John Pennington and Ellen (Leigh) Pennington. It should be noted that since William Pennington and John Pennington were not uncommon names in those times, the Wigan baptism record could in fact relate to an entirely different William Pennington with a father named John.

It is believed that he married a Mary in 1619; but no verifiable record of that marriage has yet been found. There is a marriage in London (175 miles away from Wigan, & 305 miles from Muncaster) on 3 Mar 1620 of a William Pennington to a Marie Wilson^[2], but in the absence of any firm evidence to the contrary, this would more likely refer to one of the many (25+) other William Pennington's living around this time.

However, since a child Ephraim was born to William in 1620, it is quite likely that he could have married in 1619.

There have also been suggestions that William was later married to Margaret Hall, but since she was born in 1627 and was 32 years his junior, this is viewed as extremely unlikely. That marriage linkage has now been removed from this profile.
