Biography

Bartholomew was born about 1645. (His birth is an estimate based on his marriage.)

Bartholomew was listed in the Hearth Tax return of St Stephen, Bristol, as having two fireplaces in about 1665[1]

Bartholomew Penrose of St Stephen, Bristol, shipwright, married Dorothy Pett of St Stephen, Widow, on the 30th of September 1666,[2] by Marriage License (dated 26th of September 1666) at St Stephen, Bristol, England.[3][4]

Bartolomew probably passed away before 1696 as Dorothy Penrose, living in St Stephen, is recorded as a widow in that year. [5]

Research Notes

Possible Christenings.

  1. Bartholomew Penrose, son of John Penrose, christened 21 April 1630 at Fremington, Devon. [6] Fremington in on the Devon coast about 95 miles from Bristol.
  2. Bartholomew Penrose, son of Wm. Penrose, christened 23 January 1620 at Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorkshire.[7] Hull on the Yorkshire coast is about 220 miles from Bristol., It is still a possible birth place for Bartholomew, as there is evidences that it was a ship building centre in the 1700 and would be likely that ship builders moved around the coast.
