Disputed Children & Surname
Wikitree guidelines specifically state to use the formal name as it appears in official documents at the time of birth. At St. Mary Aldermary, the "Pepper" children and their parents were Peppit. Names changed and evolved a lot during the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s. It was not until the mid 1800s that spelling began to stabilize. Whatever the family search and Ancestry and other internet trees say, this family is properly named Peppit in this timeframe. None of the children of Robert and Elizabeth Leake are known to have immigrated to New England. Alice has been disproved as wife of Joseph Clark. And Robert bpt 1629 would only have been five in 1634, when Robert of Roxbury became freeman. The others are known to have died young
Biography
Robert Peppit married Elizabeth Leake, 08 Jun 1615, Saint Mary Aldermary, London, London, England[1] The transcription at https://www.freereg.org.uk also says Peppit and adds they were both members of the St. Mary Aldermary parish, and the location Cordwainer, which is a ward in London. Some of the children's baptism transcriptions at freereg. mention that they were dwelling in Turnbase lane and that Robert was a taylor and a merchant taylor.[2]
Robert had children baptized and buried at Saint Mary Aldermary, London, England. It is presumed that Elizabeth Leake was the mother although early baptismal registers seldom mentioned the mother's name
John Peppitt, bpt. 02 Apr 1616[3][2] Buried 19 May 1618 john son of Robert[2]
Robert Peppit, baptized 02 Feb 1618.[4] 2 feb 1617/18[2] Robert Peppit bur. 22 Jan 1618/9[2]
Mary Peppit, bpt. 15 Feb 1632[9] 1631/2.[2] Marye Peppit, dtr of Robert, was buried 30 Sep 1638
Richard Peppit, was baptized 26 May 1636.[10][2] Richard, son of Roberte Peppite was buried 23 Oct 1639[2]
An Elizabeth Peppit was bur 17 Nov 1630.[2] The register does not say dtr of Robert, but there are more children born after this death and no mention of a second marriage for Robert, so presumably this is the dtr bpt. 1627.
Robert Peppit, a "pore man" was buried 11 May 1638, at St. Mary Aldermary.[2]
