Memoir

A memoir, written in Hazel's hand about 1980, was found in a photo album in the possession of her son, E. Duane Kelly. It read as follows:

I was born in Washington Co Kans Apr 14, 1899 a small town of Haddam. My parents names were Carlos & Lula Percival. I had a bro 4 yrs older, and 2 younger sisters. I attended a small country school 4 miles from home, until in the 4th grade then we moved to Western Ks a small town of Palco in rooks Co. I was 10 yrs old at that time, my bro 14, sisters 6 yrs + 1 yr old. We lived on a large wheat farm 1 1/2 m. from school or town, so it was to walk to + from school 5 da a wk during summer months, also help with all the chores that are on a farm. We raised wheat, corn + cattle also many chickens, turkey + geese. It was a hard + busy life fighting grasshoppers, droughts etc. But we were a happy family + took things as they came. I graduated from High School in Palco, Ks June 2 1917, was married the later part of June 1917 to Elmer H. Kelly, he was a farmer in Graham Co. Kansas. We rented a large wheat farm 11 miles from town, with only horse + buggy for transportation to town for groceries, go to church etc. Due to lack of moisture our first 2 yrs of married life was rather rough going; so we moved to Canon City, Colo in Aug 1921. Our oldest son was born in Kans. May 1919 before moving to Colo. We bought a home of 4 1/2 acres on Walnut Ave, Lincoln Park which had apple trees, cherry trees, raspberries, pears, + asparagus. We also built a chicken house + kept 100 white leghorn; sold eggs 12 cents a dozen. 1 cow, sold milk 10 qt. Our 2nd son Duane born here + bought a home in Barr. After 2 yrs of this we sold. Elmer went to work for New Jersey Zinc Plant, where he worked until retirement. We had a wonderful life working + fishing, traveling, dancing, playing cards etc. We spent 3 winters in Trailer Park in Weslaco Texas, which was a lots of fun. We had another son Duane, born April 11, 1926. We celebrated our 50 Ann. in June before my husband passed away. We have 2 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 3 great-granddaughters, 5 great-grandsons^[1]
