Lieutenant-General Arthur Ernest Percival was a senior British Army officer who is mainly remembered for surrendering Singapore to the Japanese in the Second World War.[1]

Percival was born in 1887 in Aspenden, Hertfordshire.[1][2] On 27 July 1927 he married Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" MacGregor Greer in Holy Trinity Church, Brompton; she was the daughter of Thomas MacGregor Greer, a linen merchant from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland.[3][1] He died in London in 1966 and was buried in St. John the Baptist Churchyard, Widford, Hertfordshire.[4][1]
