Disputed Origins

The surname of John's Sweet's wife is unknown. She has been identified in some family trees and publications as a sister of Stukely Westcott, but no reliable evidence confirms the relationship. According to Anderson and others, her birth surname is unknown.[1]

Biography

Mary and John Sweet were married about 1628, probably in England. She married second, about 1638, Ezekiel Holliman. John and Mary had three known children:[1]

  1. John b say 1628; m Elizabeth ___
  2. James b say 1630
  3. Meribah (later renamed Renewed) b say 1632; m John Gerardy

Mary's second husband Ezekiel was a congregant of Rhode Island founder Roger_Williams and they followed him to Providence. On July 1, 1639, they were named on a list of ten baptists identified by Rev. Hugh Peters of Salem as "those who have such noted as disobey the truth," who had received "the great censure" of his church, "wholly refusing to hear the church, denying the churches in the Bay to be true churches." [2]

Mary's Holliman's will was dated July 31, 1681. She left her Rhode Island property to her daughter Renewed and son-in-law John Gerearty.[3]

Merge into the now protected Mary Unknown.

Unknown-505983 and Westcott-811 appear to represent the same person because: Unknown was brought in with no information other than her first name, along with spouse John Sweet, for which a merge is now pending. It dosn't appear there was ever a last name added Unknown. Please merge to Westcott-811 which has sources.

Actually, I believe that the merge should go into Unknown (detach parents) and have protected her profile. Anderson sketch for John Sweet just calls her Mary ____. The alleged parents of Mary, have no source for a dtr Mary

I will do a Disputed Origins section on her profile and put the unproven parents there.

Where is the proof that Guy Westcott and Mary (Stuckely) Westcott are not the parents of Mary Westcott aka Sweet, and aka Holliman?

Is this because some people have a problem with them also being the parents of Stuckely Westcott? One more thing. Why would anyone name their son Stuckely ?(Which just happens to be his Mothers Surname), and then name his Daughter Damaris, (Which just so happens to be his Grandmothers first name, who is the mother to Guy Westcott). Both of those first names are highly unusual unless there was a good reason to use them. Just a little Common sense here, and I am going to research this until there is no more sources to seek.

I expected the name at the top of the page to read:

Mary (Westcott) Holliman aka Sweet. While her surname (and father) may be doubted, I believe her marriages are certain. Barbara

in answer to question about Surety Baron descendancy by John Schmeeckle:

Hi Steve, the big question with the Sweet/Westcott lineage is whether Mary Sweet was born a Westcott. There has to be some reason for supposing this, and right now not a shred of evidence is proposed, although the Sweet family is of the right social status for such a marriage.

A related question is the parentage of Stukely Westcott, the purported brother of Mary Sweet. It stands to reason that he was the son of a Stukely, as is currently shown, but he named his eldest daughter Damaris, leading to the supposition that he was the GRANDson of Damaris Stukely, wife of Edward Westcott. This couple is currently shown, without evidence, to be the parents of Guy Wescott who married Stukely, the alleged parents of Mary (Westcott) Sweet and Stukely Westcott.

In other words, if Mary Sweet was indeed born a Westcott, there is a good chance of a connection to the Stukely family, but not necessarily the connection currently shown. I have tagged Mary (Westcott) Sweet and Stukely Wescott as "questionable gateway ancestors," and I restored Stukely Westcott's uncertain parents, at least for the time being. Hopefully somebody will come along and improve these profiles. Otherwise, I'm inclined to detach both of them, because as things stand, there is little evidence beyond Stukely Westcott's given name and that of his eldest daughter.

As Nicole said below, it appears two women named Mary were merged into one. The older woman was probably Mary Periam. The younger was probably mary Westcott. Request this be fixed before more merges.

This Mary cannot be married to both John Sweets, or be mother to all of these children....there were 2 Mary Periams...one born 1531, one born 1579. It seems that this profile has merged the 2 Marys
