"Mrs. Marietta P. Clarke"
"Mrs. Marietta P. Clarke died in Mystic, Ct., January 15th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William A. MacDonald, of bronchial pneumonia. Her mind was clear and active almost to the last."
"She was born in South Woodstock, Vt., September 27th 1843, being 87 years old at the time of her death. Her father, Charles Dunham Perkins, and grandfather, Gaius, were much interested in education, being the founders of Green Mountain Perkins Academy in their native town, South Woodstock, and the school was named after them. She graduated from the High Class in the American School for the Deaf at Hartford in 1860, being one of the oldest if not the oldest graduates of the school at the time of her death. She celebrated the seventieth anniversary of her graduation by attending the reunion at West Hartford last June and received marked attention."
"She married Orlando A. Clarke, of Mystic, who was also educated at Hartford, and lived in Mystic nearly 60 years. Her husband died in 1913, and their home was the mecca of the deaf of the community for miles around. They were readers of the DEAF MUTES' JOURNAL for many years, taking an active interest in deaf affairs, attending conventions and reunions whenever possible. She had seven children, all living, twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her children were: Edward P., of Long Island City, formerly a teacher at Fanwood and principal of the Rome School for the Deaf; Frederick B., of New York, a sculptor; Ambrose B., of Worcester, Mass., steamfitter; Charles D., of Washington, machinist; Marietta C., of Pittsburg, scalp specialist; Mrs. Nellie A. MacDonald, of Mystic, Ct., housewife, and Orlando A., of Noank, Ct., a boatbuilder. Miss Marietta was formerly a tutor at Fanwood, and Edward P. Clarke was a teacher at Fanwood for seven years, from 1899 to 1906."
"The funeral was in Mystic, January 17th, and Edward P. Clarke acted as interpreter for the deaf. Among those present was a school-mate and lifelong intimate friend, Mrs. Harriet Slate, 84, of Hartford, who although in feeble health herself, determined to be present. Interment was in Mystic beside her late husband." 2
