Thomas was born about 1745.

Thomas Perkins, a native of London, Eng., deserted from an English man-of-war, and landed at Boston 1765. To avoid re-capture he assumed the name of Arms. Afterward moved to Clarendon , VT., then to Swanton, VT., and finally settled in St. Armand, P. Q. (see Edward W Arms reference below)

Thomas married Martha "Patty" Rhodes on April 11, 1773 in Worthington, MA. They were the parents of Charles, Mary "Polly", Patience, Thomas, William, John, Richard (1789-1862), and Rueben Arms.

After 1782 Thomas and family moved to Chittenden County, VT. By 1786 they were in Swanton when their son William was born. Next they moved to Richford, VT. When the line between the US and Canada was drawn, some of their land, including their home, was in Canada. His was the only frame house in the area. It was located on the main road from Richford, VT to Montreal, Canada. Thomas had a large orchard. Sometimes he served as a judge for local disagreements.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

I'm somewhat familiar with the Thomas Arms/Perkins story, but where did it originate?

Hello, I am a descendant of Thomas Perkins/Arms, and will look for a page from a book my family used to have detailing the inhabitants of St. Armand, Quebec, where he lived and had his children. That page tells the same story, and was written based upon interviews with the people they were writing about. I'll post that asap, but it won't be this week (holiday with me being the matriarch of the family). I live in New York State and tend to the graves of those ancestors from John Riley Armes (his son) on down. I look forward to "speaking" with you. BTW, some of his children are not listed here, I'll update that as soon as I figure out how. Today I signed up, it might take a while, hard to teach an old dog new tricks!

Based on the first source in this profile "A genealogical record of the Arms family..." I believe the current parents on this profile should be removed. He was born Perkins.

Troy NY, 1877. p 43. https://archive.org/stream/genealogicalreco00arms#page/43/mode/1up Notes Contains a record of a Thomas Perkins who assumed the surname Arms who is the father of this Thomas Arms.

Hope this helps

Please see Perkins-6064.... is this same person?

Perkins-10596 and Perkins-6064 appear to represent the same person because: There is no difference between these. Both suggest he was originally a Perkins. Clear duplicate.

We still do not know who Thomas Arms' parents are. In fact, in family histories compiled by descendants of Thomas Arms, there is speculation that Arms was not his birth name, but a name he assumed as an adult.
