I find no evidence for calling John a sergeant. The origin of this appears to have been George Augustus Perkins, in both editions of his Perkins genealogy, the pioneer work on the family. Many have copied him since without question. This is a mistake, because, although it was a massive and impressive undertaking, he has other errors as well. He apparently was confused by there being sergeants in earlier generations. I've looked at deeds, town and vital records, court records and probate records - no Sgt. John. If anyone has found a reference to him as such from a contemporary record, I'd be happy to be corrected, but for now I think the sergeant suffix should be removed.
