Research Notes

Original Details:

  • The following extract (FamilySearch.org submission) is from Nicholas Perkins in Descendants of Nicholas Perkins of Virginia, by William K Hall, 1958: Ann Arbor Michigan 700+ pages plus index. Specifically to Nicholas Perkins #3324 pages 23, 56-57: Page 56 #3324. NICHOLAS PERKINS (see p. 23) was born July 7, 1745, probably in Goochland Co. , Va., and died Dec. 8, 1800, probably in Williamson Co., Tenn. He married Aug. 26, 1765, Leah Pryor (daughter of John Pryor and Margaret Gaines), born Nov. 20, 1747, died Feb. 8, 1810. They lived in Pittsylvania Co., Va., and later in Davidson Co., Tenn. Nicholas Perkins moved with his father to Halifax Co., Va., in 1755 and when his father died in 1762, Nicholas Perkins was bequeathed half of his father's land lying on Dan River on the north side of the river together with land and mill on Mobley's Creek (see p. 22). On Aug. 15, 1764, Nicholas Perkins was granted a patent to 90 acres "on both sides Mobarty's Creek, adjoining Hardiman's land" in Halifax County (p. 648 Patents Bk. 36). He also received these patents in Pittsylvania County (which was formed from Halifax County in 1767): May 4, 1780, 340 acres on Moberly's Creek and the branches of Mountain Creek, adjoining Harris and others (p. 271 Patent Bk. A). June 1, 1784, 400 acres on the branches of Dan River adjoining lands of Harrison, Kirkland, etc. (p. 732 Bk. L). Aug. 28, 1787, 300 acres on the draughts of Mountain Run, adjoining lands of Jenkins and Charles Oaks (p. 49 Bk. 14).
  • The name of Nicholas Perkins first appears on the Pittsylvania County tax list in the year 1782 when he paid both real estate taxes on 927 acres of land and also personal taxes. In 1784 he acquired 400 acres of land (by patent-— see above) and 632 acres from Lemuel Smith. In 1793 he is listed as Nicholas Perkins, Senior. In addition to his son Nicholas Perkins #3324—9 (born 1779), he also had two nephews named Nicholas Perkins; Nicholas Perkins #3321-5 and Nicholas Tate Perkins #3322-3 (born 1767), who may have lived at one time in Pittsylvania County. Because of this, it is difficult to interpret the records with any certainty as to who was who. He is probably the one who made a deed in 1773 to William Maghee (p. 297 Pittsylvania Deed Bk. 3).
  • When his brother Peter Perkins‘ house proved inadequate to shelter the sick of Greene's army (see p. 51), Nicholas Perkins' home was also used as a hospital. As a result he held three public service claims. One of them (p. 6 Pittsylvania County Court Booklet) reads: At a Court of Claims held at the Courthouse of Pittsylvania County the 18th Day of March 1782 for Adjusting Claims for property impressed or Taken for Public Service: To Nicholas Perkins for Damages Sustained from Part of the General Hospital being at his House. £16.s10. To the same for £60 Iron @9d, 2 Beaves 45/ each impressed for Continental use. £6.s15. Additional claims are recorded on p. 60 Pittsylvania County Court Booklet and on p. 23 Commissioner's Bk. V. These non-military services make his descendants eligible for membership in the D. A. R. and the S. A. R. He is listed in the 1790 census as living in Pittsylvania Co. , Va., and from there he and his wife moved to that part of Davidson Co., Tenn., which in 1799 became Williamson County, where he died Dec. 8, 1800.
  • Nicholas Perkins established his home near the site of the present village of Brentwood. Mr. R. H. Jackson wrote that he copied the abstract of the land on which the Scales graveyard at Brentwood is located and that it mentions the land on which Nicholas Perkins lived (see also p. 174 Davidson Deed Bk. 1). He was named executor in the will of his brother Constantine Perkins in 1790 (see p. 58). There is no will for Nicholas Perkins on file in Williamson Co. , Tenn.——possibly there is one for him in Davidson County. On June 17, 1803, in Davidson Co., Tenn. (p. 36 Deed Bk. F), there was recorded a deed of "Nicholas T. Perkins and William Perkins between Daniel Perkins, Thomas H. Perkins, Leah Perkins, and John Perkins, executors of Nicholas Perkins, deceased." Leah Pryor Perkins was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church—see “The Oldest Church” by William H. Whitsill. His children are listed in the book, “Laurus Crawfurdiana. Memorials of the Crawford Family” by Mrs. Frank A. Vanderbilt, 1883[1], and they are also listed in the “Claybrook manuscript, a record of the Perkins family” now in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tenn.
