Biography

Notables Project
Thomas Perrot MP is Notable.

Thomas Perrot son of John Perrot and his wife, Anne Cheyne,[1] was born in 1553. He was knighted in September 1579 by Sir William Drury, Lord Justice of Ireland [2] while serving with his father in Ireland and on his return to England was clapped in the Fleet for threatening to fight a duel with Sir Walter Raleigh.

On the 17th of July 1583 he married Dorothy Devereux, lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth, daughter of Walter Devereux and his wife, Lettice Knollys [3] without the consent of the Queen. For this affront he was again in the Fleet. They had one son and one daughter. [4] His son pre-deceased him without issue. [5][6]

It is thought that he might have entered Parliament as member for Pembrokeshire in 1572. In 1586 he was campaigning in the Netherlands, fighting at the Battle of Zutphen on the 22nd of September.[4]

Thomas was returned to parliament as member for Cardiganshire at a by-election in 1586 following the death of Griffith Lloyd. [7] In 1588 he was busy in Wales organising defences against a possible Spanish invasion. His father was put on trial in 1592 on a charge of High Treason, was convicted, attainted and imprisoned in the Tower of London where he died in September. [8] [9] Despite his father's attainder Thomas was returned to Parliament as member for Pembrokeshire in 1593 by the support of his brother-in-law Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. [10]

Thomas' will, written on the 12th of February 1594, was proved on the 15th. Having no son to succeed him he left his estates to be divided between his wife and his daughter, Penelope. [4][11]

Research Note

History of Parliament does not suggest that he was married more than once.[4]
