Biography

William was an excellent carpenter and woodworker, especially with stairs. He believed there should always be a squeak in a flight of stairs. He built all the woodwork and paneling at the Paterson Women's Club on Broadway in Paterson. He also built 3 houses on Broadway (# 185, 187, 189).

It is believed he built two private houses and one hotel in New Orleans during Reconstruction. He was recorded in Gardiner's New Orleans Directory for 1866 living at 795 Dauphine Street in the French Quarter. [1] While working in New Orleans, he took his pay in Mexican silver coins. When he returned to Paterson, he had the coins made into silver flatware by the Black Starr Silver Company.

William served as a member of the Passaic County Board of Freeholders from 1870-72. [2]

In his later years, he walked with a cane although he did not need it. He used it to swing in a debonair fashion. He liked plump women and his daughter Mary said that if he didn't have two sons on the Paterson police force, he would have been behind bars.
