Descendants of Gilbert Austin Quinn

Generation No. 1

1. GILBERT AUSTIN1 QUINN was born Abt. 1828 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1893 in Texas. He married (1) MARTHA PERRY January 05, 1848 in Marshall County , Mississippi. She was born Abt. 1831 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1859. He married (2) MARGARET BORDEN Aft. 1860 in Texas. She died Aft. 1920.

Notes for GILBERT AUSTIN QUINN: Mississippi marriage Index lists marriage date as January, 5, 1848 , Another Mississippi Marriage record source lists Marshall County, Mississippi as the marriage place, for this couple.

Hunt County Texas Census 1860 precinct # 7 P. O. South Sulphur Sep. 18 Pg 331.

104/96 GILBERT A QUINN 32 Tenn. 1224/1000 Merchant Martha A.E. 29 Tenn Mary H. 8 Mississippi Dewitt C. 6 Texas Allen I 5 Texas Rhoda J. 3 Texas Gilbert H. 1 Texas Josephine Perry 15 Tenn.

There are two more known children of Gilbert Austin Quinn. Rose Quinn who m. John Gorden and Alice Quinn who married a Caldwell / Cardwell and lived around Sulphur Springs ,Texas in the early 1900's It is not certain if these children were children of Martha Perry or if there was another wife who was the Mother of these two children.

Gilbert Austin Quinn m. 2nd Margaret Borden after 1860. They had children ; William Quinn George Oliver Quinn Archie Monroe Quinn Emma Quinn Una Quinn

Gilbert Austin Quinn died before before 1893, since his widow Margaret Borden Quinn m. Ab Gilley at that time in Wise County Texas.

I have found a tombstone in the Chico Cemetery in Wise County Texas for; G.A. Quinn b. Jan 6, 1831 d. Nov.8 1888 I feel sure this is our Gilbert Austin Quinn, since his widow married Abner Gilley in Wise County in 1893, but I have found no proff. ( Still Looking)

From my Gilbert Houston Quinn side of the family, they say Gilbert Austin Quinn was in the Civil War. ( Confederate) and served as a Boot & Saddle Maker. Going through the entire war and never having fought in a battle, also that his family stayed In Arkansas with his brother John Quinn while he was gone to war . NOTE; this is a family story . I have not been able to find Civil war records for Gilbert Austin Quinn. They heard their father speak about an Uncle John and an Uncle Leonard and also about one Aunt, but I do not know where these brothers & sister were except that John Quinn was supposed to have lived in Arkansas on a large River.. Again note these are family stories and need to be proved.

Notes for MARGARET BORDEN: After the death of Gilbert Austin Quinn, his widow Margaret Borden Quinn , married Abner Gilley, on 5 April 1893 in Wise County, Texas. She had another child, a daughter Minnie Gilley who married Leoland Davis. Kate Quinn and her brother Jack Quinn talked about the fact the younger Quinn boys, Will, Ollie and Archie , did not like this step father and could not get along with him so they came to live with Gilbert Houston and Rebecca Newman Quinn , soon after Margaret remarried and made that their home. The daughters Emma and Una , stayed with their Mother and Ab. Gilley

Notes for ALLEN I. QUINN: Kate Quinn Morgan reported( from her memory,) the fact she understood Allen Quinn died as a young child from being bitten by a rabid skunk. Mother also remembered her father speaking of a brother who died from being kicked in the head by a young mule, but Mother did not remember what his name was.

iii. DEWITT C. QUINN, b. Abt. 1854.

Notes for DEWITT C. QUINN: Uncle Jack Quinn, thought Dewitt Quinn was shot and killed by a man named Rice in Corsicana, Texas about 1925. I have not located a record,

Notes for ALICE QUINN: Again these notes are from the memory of Kate Quinn Morgan. She remembered her father talking about his sister ( and was under the impression she might have been a half sister) Alice, but is not sure she ever saw her. She thought Alice Quinn lived in the Sulphur ,Texas Area in the early 1900's

2. MARY HENRI2 QUINN (GILBERT AUSTIN1) was born Abt. 1852 in Mississippi, and died October 13, 1922 in Dallas, Texas. She married (1) MARTIN LUTHER STROW Abt. 1869. He was born 1848 in S.C., and died 1881 in Rains County Texas. She married (2) CHARLES FRANCES SLAGLE Abt. 1879. She married (3) CAMPBELL Aft. 1881. She married (4) BISHOP Aft. 1882.

Notes for MARY HENRI QUINN: Mary Henry/Henri Quinn is said to have been married more than one time. Her last marriage is thought to have been to ? Bishop and Mother thought there was a daughter Mamie Bishop from this marriage, but I have found no record of the marriage or children. My Mother knew her Aunt Mary but did not know her children and was not sure how this Mamie Bishop was related to the family.

The information of Mary Henri Quinn Strow and children and Mary Ann Quinn Strow Slagle and children was obtained from descendants of that family, Nancy Walzel and Bennie James.

Children of MARY QUINN and MARTIN STROW are: 11. i. BETHNEY ELIZABETH3 STROW, b. 1870. ii. JAMES WILLIAM STROW, b. 1871. iii. JOHN H. STROW, b. 1872. iv. HARRIET ANN STROW, b. 1874. v. MARTIN LUTHER STROW, b. 1876.

Child of MARY QUINN and BISHOP is: vii. MAMIE3 BISHOP. Note; from the family of Charles Houston Slagle we learn there was no children from the marriage of Mary Henri and Mr , Bishop.

3. RHODA JANE2 QUINN (GILBERT AUSTIN1) was born Abt. 1857, and died Abt. 1920. She married WILLIAM M. BORDEN, son of GEORGE BORDEN and SARAH WHEELER. He died Aft. 1920.

Notes for RHODA JANE QUINN: Will Borden, husband of Rhoda Jane Quinn was related to Margaret Borden who married Gilbert Austin Quinn and also to George Brock who married Alice Quinn ( daughter of Gilbert H. and Rebecca Newman Quinn) Kate Quinn Morgan thought they had a son named Massey or Manasse Borden but she was not sure. Massey/Manassa Borden had a son named Quinn Borden.

Will & Jane Borden lived at Lugart, Oklahoma in 1925 & 1926. I have a note that Jane also had a son named Allen Borden.

This information needs to be proved.

Notes for WILLIAM M. BORDEN: Will Borden was related to Margaret Borden who married Gilbert Austin Quinn. He was also related to George Brock who married Mary Alice Quinn daughter of Gilbert H. and Rebecca Newman Quinn. Rosie Catherine (Kate) Quinn Morgan thought she remembered at least one child of this family. She thought they had a son named Massey Or Manasse Borden. She also wondered if a John and Mattie Garrett might be from this family. She remembered them Living near Lone Wolf in Oklahoma and calling her father (Gilbert Houston Quinn) Uncle Hous. Then she decided they might have been related through Mary Henry (Henri) Quinn.

Child of RHODA QUINN and WILLIAM BORDEN is: i. MANASSA3 BORDEN.

4. ROSE2 QUINN (GILBERT AUSTIN1) was born Aft. 1860 in Texas, and died Abt. 1910 in Oklahoma  ?. She married JOHN GORDEN. He died in unknown.

Notes for ROSE QUINN: Rose Quinn and John Borden lived near Duncan, before Oklahoma became a state. Gilbert Houston Quinn also lived in that area and two of his children, George Jackson and Rosie Catherine were born there. It is thought Rose Quinn Borden died in that area in the early 1900's These notes and children list are from the Memory of Rosie Catherine Morgan who was a niece of Rose Quinn Gorden

Children of ROSE QUINN and JOHN GORDEN are: i. MARY JANE3 GORDEN. ii. BESSIE GORDEN. iii. ROSIE LEE GORDEN. iv. JIM GORDEN. v. GRACIE GORDEN.

5. GILBERT HOUSTON2 QUINN (GILBERT AUSTIN1) was born July 17, 1859 in Hunt County, Texas, and died April 08, 1937 in Edna, Texas. He married REBECCA ANN NEWMAN December 18, 1890 in Moody (Mc Lennon)Texas, daughter of JOSEPH NEWMAN and SARAH HOLDER. She was born April 11, 1870 in Glasgow, Kentucky, and died December 03, 1949 in Edna, Texas.

Notes for GILBERT HOUSTON QUINN: Gilbert Houston Quinn suffered most of his life from a Kidney problem according to some of his children. Therefore the family moved quiet often trying to find a place where he could have better drinking water and hopefully less health problems. Note the birth places and death places of these children and imagine moving, that many times and that great a distance, back when the transportation was by team and wagon. Mother talked about her father always kept the best of horses in order to be able to move when he felt he needed to, and his sons always kept the best of saddle horses to ride. I would not have made a good pioneer Mother. Can you imagine how our Ma Quinn managed to cook, keep clean clothes and care for this family for weeks on end as they moved by wagon and team ? Quiet a fete I would say. We came from a hardy stock and they left us a great Heritage to live up to.
