Biography

Samuel, son of Anthony Perry and Elizabeth Unknown was born December 10, 1648. ^[1] He married Mary Miller (aka Millard) December 12, 1676 ^[2]

Samuel Perry was a soldier serving under Major Bradford in Philip’s War.^[3] Seven children, born at Rehoboth.^[4]

1.) Samuel was the oldest of six children, all born and raised in Rehoboth. He was 27 years old when war broke out with the Indians in March 1675. His brother Jashiel joined Major Bradford's troops and marched off in the Narragansett expedition in December 1675. On 25 December 1675, six days after the fight with the Narragansetts, the colonies raised an additional 1000 troops. Samuel was one of the Rehoboth men who joined those troops, also under Major Bradford, serving 24 days as a corporal, probably on garrision duty. As a corporal he received 2 shillings per day for a total of 2 pounds and 8 shillings -- see Early Rehoboth by Bowen, pages 43, 44 and 50. The war ended the fall of 1676 about the time his brother Jashiel was buried in Rehoboth. In 1678 Samuel's father gave him half of all his lands in the North Purchase of Rehoboth and Samuel married that December. Over the next 15 years he would become the father of 7 children, naming the oldest two after his brother Jashiel and sister Mehitable who also died in 1676. Samuel was appointed surveyor of highways in Rehoboth in 1681 -- see Plymouth Colony Records. The following year his father died, leaving him half of the rest of his lands, worth almost 200 pounds. In 1699 his oldest daughter died several months after giving birth to Samuel's first grandson. He predeceased the rest of his children, except for his second daughter who had died as a baby. Samuel made his will the 2d of November 1705. He gave his son Jashiel 70 acres on the Grass Plain in Rehoboth; together with 8 acres in the north purchase, the meadow land he had received from his father, and half his lands in Rehoboth and Attleboro, giving the other half to his youngest son Samuel, who he made executor. He asked that Samuel maintain his mother, giving her "five pounds a year, 20 shillings in money and 4 pounds in provision or cloathing" while she remained a widow. Samuel gave his daughters Elizabeth, Rebeccah and Sarah seven pounds each and a cow when they came of age; he gave his grandson Henry Amedown 20 shillings; he gave his wife Mary ten pounds and "my best bed and furniture to it and one spare pair of sheets to be at her dispose". Mary disavowed the will, asking for her thirds, which was given her on 3 July 1706. Its not known who got the sheets. See Bristol County Probate, Book 2:159.
