When Lawrence Robert Perry was born on January 30, 1906, in Covina, California, his father, James, was 24 and his mother, Elsie, was 19. The eldest of seven children, he worked alongside his parents to manage the family dairy farm. He attended the local schools and graduated from Covina Union High School in 1924. When his father died, in 1926, Lawrence remained home and assisted his mother with the dairy, farm and household. He married Jewell Lavern Black on September 3, 1933, in his hometown. The couple settled near the rural farming community of Ripley, where they homesteaded their property. They farmed miscellaneous vegetable crops over the years, primarily cabbage and broccoli. The couple remained childless. Lawrence once shared how he was injured by being hit with agriculture over-spray while working a walnut grove in his early twenties. His skin was burned and most of his hair fell out. Although his skin healed and most of his hair grew back, he believed the exposure to the chemicals rendered him sterile. He died on January 15, 1989, in Ripley, Riverside County, California, at the age of 82.
His quick wit and at-the-ready puns made Uncle Lawrence a favorite.
As remembered by great niece, Head-1409.
