John Perry was born on 11 February 1821 in Northampton, Northamptonshire, his father, John, was 24 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 25. He married Caroline Devonshire Keep in 1846 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire. They had seven children in 13 years. He died on 20 April 1869 in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire, at the age of 48.
