Biography

Parentage; Date of Birth

Nathaniel's parentage and date and place of birth are supported by a page on FamilyCentral.net that indicates that at least his parentage, and perhaps also his date and place of birth, are written down in a 1786 family bible.[1] Nathaniel's parentage is also supported by William Perry's will, which refers to a son named Nathaniel.[2] Nathaniel's estimated date of birth is confirmed by Nathaniel's age as reported in the 1800, 1820 and 1830 US Censuses. In the 1800 US, Census, he was listed as under 16 thru 25, which would have meant that he was probably born sometime in 1775-1784. In the 1820 US Census, he was listed as 45 and upwards, which would have meant that he was probably born in 1775 or earlier. In the 1830 US Census, he was listed as 50-59, which would have meant that he was probably born sometime in 1771-1780.

Marriage

Nathaniel married Sarah Harper in Caroline, Maryland on June 2, 1801.[3][4][5][1]

Children

A page on FamilyCentral.net indicates that a 1786 family bible shows Nathaniel's and Sarah's children, their dates and places of birth, and, for some, their spouses.[1] Nathaniel's parentage of most of the children listed below is also confirmed by the record of the distribution of his estate transcribed below. According to the information on the FamilyCentral.net page Nathaniel and Sarah had 12 children, all born in Caroline, Maryland:

  1. John A., b August 29, 1802,[1] m. December 11, 1833 Ann Sharpe,[1] d. after April 23, 1844[6]
  2. Edward R., b. December 15, 1803,[1], m. 1st(?) _________, m. 2d(?) March 20, 1840 Sarah Burgess[1] [Census records suggest he was already married in 1830 and had children; so either the marriage date of Sara Burgess is incorrect or he had a prior marriage], d. after April 23, 1844[6]

Manumission of George Cornish

Set forth below is the only original record found that relates to Nathaniel, apart from his marriage record, US Census records, and the record of the distribution of his estate.

US Censuses for 1800, 1820, 1830

The 1800 US Census shows Nathaniel as the head and sole occupant of a household in Caroline Maryland containing a male (him) between the ages of 16 and 26 years old.[9]

The 1820 US Census shows Nathaniel as the head of a household in Election District 3, Caroline, Maryland consisting of 3 free white males under 10 (Richard, James and Charles), 2 free white males 10-16 (William and Josiah), 1 free white male 16-18 (John and Edward), 1 free white male 45 and up (Nathaniel), 2 free white females under 10 (Sarey and Margaret), 2 free white females 10-16 (Mary Ann and Elizabeth), 2 free white females 26-45 (Nathaniel's wife Sarah and an unidentified woman), and 1 free colored person under 14 (possibly George Cornish, although he would not have been free at the time). 5 persons in the household were engaged in agriculture.[10] Nathaniel Jr. would not have been included because he was not born until 1821.

The 1830 US Census shows Nathaniel as the head of a household in District 3, Caroline, Maryland consisting of 1 free white male 5-10 (Nathaniel Jr), 2 free white males 10-15 (James and Charles), 2 free white males 15-20 (Richard and an unidentified boy), 3 free white males 20-30 (probably John, William and Josiah), 1 free white male 50-59 (Nathaniel), 1 free white male 10-15 (Margaret), 1 free white female 15-20 (Sarey), 1 free white female 20-30 (probably Elizabeth), 1 free white female 40-49 (Nathaniel's wife Sarah), 1 free colored male 55-99, 1 free colored female under 10, 1 female slave under 10, 1 female slave 10-24, and 1 female slave 24-35[11] The 1830 US Census shows that Nathaniel's son Edward had established his own household by 1830 and had apparently gotten married and had several children.[11] One of Nathaniel's older daughters -- either Mary or Elizabeth -- is not listed in Nathaniel's household, suggesting that one of them may have gotten married, moved into a relative's household or died.

The 1840 US Census for Caroline, Maryland does not show a household headed by Nathaniel, but does show a household headed by his son William, which included a free white male 70-79. This may have been Nathaniel, although, if so, his age was marked in error as he would have been 65 at the time.[12]

Death

Nathaniel died sometime in 1841, as shown by a Caroline County record dated November 23, 1841 in which John A. Perry, William Perry, Edward R. Perry and Nathaniel Perry posted a bond for the administration of their deceased father's estate by John and William.[13]
