James Peters was born February 9, 1746, the son of Valentine Hewlett Peters and Ruth Smith of Hampstead, NY[1][2] [3] [4]

On June 18, 1767, he married Margaret Lester, daughter of Benjamin Lester and Mary Bedell[1]. They settled in New Brunswick in 1783 where James was one of the agents appointed to locate lands granted to the Loyalists. Like many Loyalists who landed in New Brunswick, he was first a grantee at Parrtown (Saint John). He later received a larger land grant at what would become Gagetown in Queens County. [5] [6]

By 1792, he was a magistrate for Queens County. He was also elected to the 2nd New Brunswick Legislature in the same year. He sat in the Legislature from 1793. He served in both roles until his death in 1820, likely participating in most of the founding conversations around the government of the young colony.[7]

Their children included:

  11. Benjamin Lester, born 29 Jun 1790, who married Mary Ann Winnett on 26 Jun 1823 at Annapolis Royal, NS, and settled in Saint John[1]
  12. William Tyng, born 1793, who married Isabella (Lee) Cooke, d/o Joseph Lee of Fredericton on October 17, 1815[1]

The Peters family also had at least one African American "domestic servant" named Eliza Fisher. The exact dates of her employ by the Peters family are unknown, however she worked for them nearly 15 years according to a second-hand account in her obituary. Eliza "ran away" to Saint John, got married, and lived to the age of 105.[8]

James passed away on January 16, 1820 and was interred at Saint John's Anglican Church in Queens County.[2][9][1] [6]
