Biography

Jacob was the son of William Peters and Margaret Hasbrouck. He married Catherine Wurtz in 1833 in Harley, New York. Coming to Michigan in 1836, they first located in Pleasant Valley, Livingston County. Ten years later they settled in Milford, where he was at the time of his death, was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens. - From the Milford Historical Society: "Jacob Peters came to Milford in 1846 and a year later purchased the mill of Mr. Welles. In connection with it Mr. Peters operated a Greek Revival woolen mill and a cooperage. Abram Seaman operated a tannery near by, thus creating Milford's first "industrial park." The tannery and cooperage buildings still stand, now serving as homes at 532 W. Huron Street and 138 Peters Road. The gristmill was rebuilt and enlarged by John Peters in the early 1870's. The mill passed out of the Peters family in 1885 and after several changes of ownership was purchased by William Peters in 1902."

Another obit: Mr. Jacob Peters died Jan 26 at his late residence in this village, after a brief illness in the 84th year of his age. He was born in Kingston Point, Ulster Co, N.Y. Aug 24, 1808. Coming to Michigan in 1836, he first located in Pleasant Valley, Livingston Co. Ten years later he took up his residence in Milford, where he was at the time of his death one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens. He united in wedlock at Harley, N.Y. in 1833. Of nine children born to them, only two are living; Mrs. Charles Foote of Gratiot Co. and Wm. Peters of Milford. Mr. Peters united in early life with the Dutch Reformed Church of Harley, N.Y., and whilst he never transferred his membership to the U.P. and C. Church, where he worshipped, there was none more liberal in th support of the church, none more faithful in Christian service, none more exemplary in Christian living than was he. "The memory of the just is blest."
