Bernard Albert Peters Ph.D., 76
Bernard Albert Peters, 76, died at home on Jan. 8, 2015. While Ben was an accomplished psychologist, his passion was working with his hands and mind. He was a self-taught, expert craftsman. Ben possessed a gift of designing structures and was able to achieve his dream of building a mountain home for himself and his loving wife, Barbara. Ben was born April 13, 1938, in St. Paul, Minn. He was the son of Albert J. Peters and Catherine Jungmann. His siblings include Elaine and George, both of Minnesota. Ben grew up in Minnesota and after college graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he specialized in interpretation of the Russian language and worked within the Army’s Special Intelligence Division in Germany. After an honorable discharge, he worked as a counselor for many years, before deciding to pursue a doctorate degree. In 1972, Ben graduated from the University of Utah with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Neuro-Psychology. Ben’s love of high-mountain back packing brought him to Montana where he became the director of the Mental Health Center in Anaconda and eventually Butte. He worked for the Mental Health Center for several years before entering into a private practice from which he retired in the mid-1990s. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Albert Peters; his aunt and uncle, Grace and Leo McGuire; and son, Richard Pierce III. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Peters; sons, Ron (Susan) Pierce, Robert (Sue) Pierce, and Randy (Laura Jean) Pierce; and daughters, Eileen (Tim) Foust and Kathy (Mike) Cashell. His grandchildren include Dedrick and Joshua Selensky-Foust, Adam, Amber and Tyler Pierce, James Richard (JR) and Jesse Pierce, Courtney Cashell and Katie and Sean Pierce. Ben is also survived by his sister, Elaine (Bob) Fuller and brother, George (Delrose) Peters, and numerous nieces and nephews in Minnesota. Ben was a devoted brother, husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed dearly by all. There will be private family services at a later date.
