Biography

Anne Cathrine Petersen's birth record from the Church Books of Bjerning, Sonder Tyrstrup, Haderslev, says she was born on 22 September 1865 and Christened on October 15. Her parents were Peter Andreason Hjort Petersen and Anne Mette Kirstine Petersdatter Refshauge, 28 years. John Hansen Peterson and Anne Christina Claussen.[1]

On 6 October 1872, the Lammershagen sailed from Hamburgh with 380 souls on board, bound for Queensland, including the full paying passengers Anne (6) and Johann Petersen (1 1/4)[2], and free passengers under the Immigration Act of 1872, Johann 33, Anna 37, and Christine (1/2) Peterson[3]. Christine[3] and Johann Jnr[2] died on the voyage. The Lammershagen arrived in Moreton Bay on 8 January 1873 and went into Quarantine on 9 January 1873.

Anne Catharina married Erasmus Kenwrick in 1882.[4] Anne and Erasmus had four children and then tragedy struck and Anne was widowed when Erasmus died in 1889.[5] An inquest into the death of Erasmus KENDRICK was held in 1889.[6]

Annie Catherine Kenwick married Charles Thompson in 1890 in Brisbane.[7]

On 16 January, 1891, Charles Roseneus Thompson took the oath of Allegiance to Queen Victoria at Brisbane in Petty Sessions, becoming a British subject in the "Colony" of Queensland. The following day he was handed his Certificate of Naturalization which states that he was a 32 year-old laborer from Denmark who lived in Mary Street, Brisbane.[8]

They were living at Jubille [Jubilee] Estate Paddington, when their son Reuben was born September 1895.[9] In The Brisbane Courier on 10 September, 1895 the Queensland Government advertised a list of Persons about to be omitted from the Electoral roll for Brisbane North District which includes "2669 Thompson, Charles Roseneus" because he has left the division[10] so it was around this time that they moved to the house in Morningside. Anna Katrina's name was not on the list because Queensland women were not eligible to vote in Federal elections until 1902 and in State elections until 1905; voting in QLD became compulsory in 1914 (indigenous and other non-European Australians excluded)[11]. In The Brisbane Courier on 23 February 1915 the Queensland Government advertised a bi-monthly electoral list for February of Persons appearing to be qualified to vote at the Election of a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Year 1915, for the Electoral District of BULIMBA (South Brisbane Division) to which objections were invited. On this list are:
- Thompson, Anna Katrina, cr. Maud and Ernest-sts., Morningside, housewife, l8 Jan., 1915, F.
- Thompson, Charles Roseneus, cr. Maud and Ernest sts., Morningside, seaman, 13 Jan, 1915, M.
- Thompson, Frank Roseneus. Maud-st., Morningside, leather worker. 30 Jan., 1915, M.[12]

The Brisbane Courier held a statutory notice to creditors that on 22 September 1938, the Public Curator would commence distributing the assets of one deceased CHARLES ROSENEUS THOMPSON late of Maud and Ernest Streets, Morningside.[13]

My sister Jo told me our father Jim told her that when he was a child his mother would take the family to visit his grandparents, Charles and Annie, for lunch on Sundays and in the centre of the dining table encased in glass was a model of the ship which brought them to Australia. John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland has a photo of a model of the Lammershagen and we are wondering if it is the model which was maybe made by our great grandfather: [1]

Jo said Dad also said his grandmother was well-off and owned a factory. Wealth is relative: to a child who is often hungry, always having enough food to eat and to be able to share with others is great wealth, so I don't think his grandparents would have had to be very wealthy for Dad to think that they were rich because Dad's father, Charles Norman, was often absent from home for extended periods until he made the absence permanent, when he abandoned his Brisbane family totally to take up residence with his de facto, Stella, and their children, in Sydney. As a result, Charles' Brisbane family were often hungry. This paternal abandonment shaped Dad. He became a keen gardener so no matter how bad times were we would never be hungry, always having bounteous fresh fruit and vegetables that he had grown.
