Mary was born at McDowall Street, Roma, Queensland, on Christmas Day 1882. She was the daughter of Peter Petersen, a Danish immigrant and his wife Susan (nee Gallagher) who came from Ireland.
Peter Petersen was born at Fynn, Denmark and was (according to his death certificate- which may be incorrect) the son of Peter Sorson and Caroline Petersen. Susan Gallagher, born at Rosguill, Donegal Ireland about 1850, was the daughter of Patrick Gallagher and Susan Shield.
Susan came to Australia at the age of 25 on the Dilharee which left London 12/5/1876 & arrived in Brisbane on 14/8/1876.
About three years later, while working as a domestic servant at Jimbour near Dalby, she met Peter Petersen - They were married at St. John's Church of England, Dalby on 16/11/1879.
Susan died at Ipswich on 13/3/1915 and her husband at Bundaberg on 28/6/1922.
