Afton Rhea Peterson was born in her grandparents home in Almy, Lincoln County, Wyoming May 6, 1896 to her parents Charles Henry Peterson and Mary Nelson Bruce. She lived her entire childhood at her parents home in Smoot, Wyoming where the family was engaged in farming and running a merchantile store. Her early life centered around the store her father owned and her fathers ranch. "I did a lot of work on the ranch and a lot of clerking in the store," she said. She attended the first eight grades at Smoot. After finishing the eighth grade she went to Paris, Idaho to attend the Fielding Academy, a church school. While attending the Academy she boarded first at Clara Stucki's and then at Jane Stucki's. It was here that she met and fell in love with E Woodruff Stucki, he was a senior and she a sophomore. During her time at Fielding she had a very enjoyable time, serving on the executive committee and the library committee. Her last two years she was a cheerleader and played basketball on the girls team. She graduated from Fielding Academy in the spring of 1916. That summer she attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City taking courses in preparation to teach. She got a job teaching at the Emerson School at Paris, Idaho, 1916 and 1917 still staying at Jane Stucki's. Woodruff had gone on a mission in 1914 and was attending the University of Utah in the spring of 1917, but came home to help with farm work. Their romance started over again and they were married October 18, 1917 in the Salt Lake Temple. Woodruff attended the University of Utah that school year and then they went back to Paris for the summer. He got a job teaching at Bern that first year in 1918. Rhea and Woodruff's oldest son and first child was born September 5, 1918 at Grandma Stucki's in Paris. The next two years they lived and taught at Liberty, Idaho where Wallace was born January 24, 1921. Rhea taught for him a number of days because of his sinus problems. The next year was spent at St. Charles, Idaho teaching at the school there. The next year they went back to the University of Utah where Woodruff got his B. S. degree in the spring of 1923. He signed up to teach at Moroni High School in Moroni , Utah and they spent the next seven years there always going back to Paris for the summers. Their third son Willard was born there December 21, 1923. Jane, their first girl was born in Moroni March 22, 1928. In the spring of 1930 the Emerson School board offered Woodruff the principalship and they moved back to Paris having purchased the old William Rich home and they lived there the rest of their lives. Adella was born December 31, 1931 and then their third daughter and sixth child was born August 10, 1941. Rhea enjoyed working in the church throughout her life. Memories of my Grandmother Rhea

Contributed By StuckiSpencerEugene1 · September 27, 2014

For most of my young life we lived on the same street as my grandparents. Their house was just one house away. We spent a lot of time at grandma's through the years. As you approached the back of the house you had to go through a back porch area that was enclosed. As you entered the kitchen from the porch the first thing you saw was the wringer washing machine. If you turned to the left there was a set of cupboards where my favorite drawer was found. Grandma had a large drawer in the middle of the lower cupboards where she kept cookies, there were always cookies in the drawer. Grandma was always pleasant but she could be firm and often was. She and her sisters were a very admirable group of ladies and I really respected them. When we would go to Peterson family reunions in Smoot, Wyoming there was never any question about who was in charge. A couple of the sisters had very strong personalities. I especially remember Rula and Burnice as fitting this description. I don't remember their father, my great grandfather very well as he died when I was quite young, but what I do remember is he also had a strong personality. This is how I picture my Peterson ancestors as I learn about them through their stories which I read now and remember hearing during my youth. My fathers youngest sister was exactly a year and a half older than I and we spent a lot of time with her at their home. I really loved and admired my grandma. She spent a lot of time with needles in her hands either knitting or crocheting and her house showed the results, it was a very warm and friendly house. She had a favorite rocking chair which was always by the window and contributed to the warmth that was always surrounding the area around her chair.
