Biography

Christiaen Pietersen--later Christopher Peterson--was born 22 December 1764 in northern Bergen County, New Jersey, and baptized there 17 March 1765 in the Schraalenberg Reformed Dutch Church.

With parents and siblings he moved to British-held New York City in 1778. He became an Associated Loyalist and fought under Captain Ruttan and Major Ward, raiding across the Hudson in Bergen County for food and wood. He took part in the Battle of the Blockhouse in 1780.

In New York in 1782 he married Maria Ouke (her name has also been interpreted as Oakes and Duke). In 1783 they were evacuated to Lower Canada and spent a cold winter in a tent.

In the spring of 1784 he was granted land in Marysburgh, Upper Canada ("opposite Adolphustown" but settled in Adolphustown near the Bay of Quinte, and soon after in adjacent Fredericksburgh, Concession 2 Lot 5. He and Maria had at least three children, 1784-1791.*

He married second Sarah McNutt and they had at least ten children, 1798-1813. In the 1808 assessment they had a round-log house on 40 cultivated and 60 uncultivated acres, 3 horses, 3 milk cows, assessed at 94 pounds.

Christopher died in 1827, age 63.

Footnote

There may have been a fourth child, Christopher. See discussion in Maria's profile.

Peterson-6541 and Peterson-2103 appear to represent the same person because: I added christopher by accident, didn't see that he already had a profile. Sorry
