Biography

William McIntosh Peterson was born in Fredericksburgh, Lennox County, Ontario in 1820. He served in militia in the Rebellion of 1837. In 1840 the family moved to Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward County. In 1845 he married Charlotte Valleau. They farmed in Ameliasburgh until at least 1859, then Huntingdon Township (Hastings County), where he was a "yeoman" in 1861. They moved to Cramahe Township (Northumberland County). He died in Cramahe in 1880 and was buried at Salem United Church.

Footnotes

William's birth year is arguable. The three census records imply 1820/1821, and that fits with his parents' marriage in 1817 and his nearest siblings' births in 1819 and 1822. Many family histories list 1820 or 1821. But his grave marker has a clear 1816.

The 1852 census of Ameliasburgh shows farms of William, his father, and his uncle Thomas Howard adjacent. It shows William and Charlotte (but not their children) residing "out of limits."
