Emma was born in New York around 1862. She probably moved with her family from Rawdon Township (Hastings County), Ontario, to Muskegon, Michigan, two years later. In 1880 she was with her mother in Muskegon.
Emma's older siblings were born in Ontario and her younger siblings in Michigan. The 1880 census lists her (and her mother) as born in New York. Perhaps she was born on a visit to her mother's family. Or perhaps the family moved from Ontario to Michigan via New York.
