MOSES WASHINGTON PETERSON SR: Moses was a freewill Baptist Minister. Moses seems a bit old, so this may not be our Moses, but if it is, he served the Union during the Civil War enlisted as a Private in Company A, 3rd Mounted Infantry Regiment, NC Another Military record states that Moses Peterson, living in Yancey Co., Farmer, enlisted on July 12, 1862, at the age of 21. However, on July 13, 1862, he was discharged and furnished a substitute. I wonder if this wasn’t Moses Sr. and his age was miswritten. It could have also been Moses Jr. who would have only been 15. Moses married Polly McKinney on Nov. 10, 1817 in Burke Co., NC. (Source County Court Records at Morganton, NC, Bond #: 000006495 North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Image Num: 005323 County: Burke Record #: 02 011) Bondsman was Hennery Masters. In the Aug. 7, 1820 Federal census of Burke Co., NC, Moses Peterson’s family is listed. One white male under 10, one white male 16-25 and one white female 16-25. He is engaged in agriculture. The total of the household is three. In Yancey County Court records of June 1836, Moses Peterson was listed as a Justice of the Peace for ”Jacks Creek Company.” In Yancey County 1840 Census, Moses Peterson’s household consists of two males under 5, 1 male 5-10, one male 10-15, one male 15-20, one male 40-50, one female under 5, one female 5-10, one female 10-15, one female 40-50. One of the adults is illiterate. In the 1850 Federal Census, Moses and Mary are living in Yancey Co., NC with children William (23), Rueben (19), Rachel (16), Charles (14), Mary (12), Lawson (10), Naomi (6), and Moses (4). Moses is listed as Baptist Clergyman, born in NC. William is a laborer. Value of real estate is 100, but this is listed under William, not Moses. In the 1860 Federal Census, Moses is listed as age 66 and his wife Mary as age 63. She cannot read or write. Moses is listed as a Baptist Clergyman. Lawson is 19 and listed as a farmer. Oma (Naomi) is listed as 16, Moses Peterson, Jr., as14 and Elvira is 8. Real estate is $450. Personal property as $391. In the 1870 Federal Census Moses Jr. is 24 and Elvira is 18. Moses (76), Mary (72), in Jack’s Creek, Yancey Co., NC. Both Moses’ cannot read or write. Elvira cannot read, but can write. Moses’ son, Lawson, lives next door. In article 554, page366 of the Toe River Valley Heritage, Vo. 1, edited by Lloyd Bailey, the Reverend Moses Washington Peterson is described as a “Free Will Baptist” minister at the White Oak Creek Church and active in the Big Ivy Association of the Separate Baptists, along with his wife Mary “Polly” McKinney. There is a tombstone in Peterson Hill Cemetery “in memory of” Moses Peterson, 4-14-1794 to 8-1-1879 and next to it a Poly Peterson, 12-8/1799 to 9-2-1882.
