Charles was born about 1836. He was the son of Moses Peterson and Mary Mckenney.

Charles was listed in the 1850 Census. [1]

Notes on CHARLES JEFFERSON PETERSON and SYDNEY STOKES PETERSON: (Notes by Beth Whitson) Charles is listed as a farmer, age 25 in the Federal Census of 1860. He is living with his wife, Selina (18). They are living near brother SYDNEY STOKES PETERSON (23) and his wife, Elizabeth (30) and their children, Charles (9) , Moses (8), Logan (6), Teresa (2) Both older boys attended school in the past year.. He enlisted Nov. 7, 1862, along with his brothers Lawson and Reuben, as a Corporal in Company G, NC 58th Infantry Regiment. He was demoted Mar. 1, 1863. He mustered out on June 30, 1863.
