DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
The ancestor of the ... Peterson family of Bristol Parish was John, who settled in Isle of Wight Co, Va., about 1660. The names of two sons, John and Batte, have been transmitted to us.
In the Parish Baptismal Register appears the following entry:
"John, son of John and Fanny Peterson, baptized Jan. 19, 1720." This John, who is regarded as the third in name and generation in Virginia, d. 1773. He m Martha, sister of the well-known brothers John, James, Archie, Richard and Thomas Thweatt of "Palestine," near Petersburg, and had issue:

found the John whose will info was in the annotation: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Peterson-674 (son of Batte - I think son of Batte Peterson-531, who's this John's son). Let me know if you/Brent agree that Peterson-674 is the right John Peterson for the 1769 will & I'll sort the children between him & this John.
the published account by the grandson of the father of this John Peterson has annotations added from county records. On page 3, the annotation is for John Peterson's will (presumably this John, brother of Batte): "The will of John Peterson, of Brunswick County, dated May 16, 1763, probated in Brunswick Co Jan 23, 1769 names sons Batte, William, John, and Kinchen Peterson; daughters Mary, Martha, Patience, Rebecca, Betty, and Lucy Peterson and daughter Temperance Taylor; sons John and Batte executors" and quoted "all the negros that Frances Powell holds in her right of dowry, they and their increase to be equally divided among my above said children." (Brunswick County Records)
I've listed descendants in text from the article in The William and Mary Quarterly that John Herbert Peterson wrote in 1829 (an account of his family). The three sons (Peter, John, Thomas) and three daughters (Martha, Mary, Francis) don't match up with all the children attached to this profile, which may be from other John Petersons.
