He and his brother, John Patterson, changed their surname from Petersen when arriving in the US in 1849. Charles returned to Sweden to marry Christina Annette Lofvel.

Charles and Christina's family genealogies are taken from family notes recorded by Christina. The original notes are incorporated in unpublished "From Swedes to Yanks," compiled by her great grandson, Quentin Cabell Smith. The original Album/ Biography was donated in 2013 to the A. T. Still University Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO. He retains a copy in 2016.

(Swedish Passenger Arrivals in the United States, 1820-1850, Olsson & Wiken, Stockholm,1995 [paraphrased]): Carl Pettersson or Petersson, age 25, arrived in New York from Goteborg, Sweden on Ship "Emilie" 3 October 1849. [recorded names of Carl's parents and wife, dates and residences are the same as those in transcribed Patterson family Bible records for Charles.] Carl traveled with teenage Carolina and Julius Matson, children of Sven Pettersson. The authors claim they were doubtless identical to Carolina Charlotta and Samuel Julius Petterrson, sister and brother of Johan Fredrick Pettersson. See note for John Patterson #3248.

(1850 Census,Louisville,Jefferson,KY,pg 317,line 20): Charles Eagerman 24 confectioner born Sweden in household of James Wood, confectioner and 20 unrelated occupants.

He and John moved to Adair Co, MO in 1854. Two brothers also came to the US, one to KY and the other to IN [family records show only one other male Petersson sibling, Johannis. Christina Lofvel's brothers John William and Sven Henry immigrated with the Pattersons, John to IN and Henry to KY.]

(Alice Patterson Shibley): Their three-month-long trip was eventful; a child died during the voyage and was buried at sea.

(1860 Census, Adair Co, MO.): Listed as farmer living with his wife and 2 sons Emmanuel Abraham and William Oscar in Salt River Township, real estate value $1900, personal assets $400, Ole Olstead, 39 born in Norway farm laborer. Birthdate in KY of Emmanuel Abraham, given in census as 1856 conflicts with date of the family's reported arrival in Adair County.

(1870 Census, Adair Co,MO): Listed as nurseryman with real estate valued $2500, personal assests $1200. Christine and all children but Rosa Ingaborg are shown.

(History of Adair County,Missouri,E.M.Violette,Denslow History Co.pg. 294): [in referring to the Patterson wholesale business] The nursery industry was at one time fairly extensive. The Patterson Nursery, which was in operation from about 1870 to sometime in the nineties, was a well ordered and successful plant [pun intended?] It was located one-half mile northwest of Kirksville. Since its discontinuance there has been no well developed industry of the kind in the country. The Pattersons were during their time instrumental in stirring up an active interest in horticulture in the county. During the eighties a large horticultural society was organized and meetings were held once a month.[also see notes, John Patterson #3248]

(Missouri Pioneers, Hodges & Woodruff, v 19-24): Patterson, Charles; residence, Kirksville; business, Nursery; born Sweden; 1857 to Adair County.

(Records of Quentin Cabell Smith): The Patterson Nursery seed catalogue remained in the family of Charles's son Henry until 1990 when it was donated to The St. Louis Mercantile Library, St. Louis, MO. The leather-bound catalogue bearing "C.E.Patterson" in gold lettering was produced ca. 1875 and consists of 100 hand-colored lithographs printed by Stretcher Litho Co., Rochester, N.Y. The pages illustrating shrubery, fruits and berries were connected by cloth straps so that when fully opened and spread out a dozen pages are viewable at one time. About one dozen duplicate plates are still with Henry's descendants.
