Research Notes

Stephen Pettus called himself "Stephen Pettus of Hanover" in deeds to his sons in 1745 and 1754...In 1729 Stephen Pettus patented extensively in western Hanover. Louisa, set off from Hanover in 1742, included part of his holdings. He deeded Louisa lands to sons Dabney, John and George. To son, Stephen, he deeded or willed Hanover land....Stephen Pettus of Hanover's sons all left Hanover and Louisa. And oddly, as they went elsewhere, Overton-Pettuses moved into Hanover and Louisa, and are known as the Pettuses of Louisa...[7]

This is the John (125) in William Walker Pettus IV "Thomas Petyous of Norwich, England and his Pettus Descendants" vol 1 2011, p 310. The author is not certain of his middle name as Dabney. His wife is listed as Anne Overton without dates of birth and death. The information below is taken from that book

Nothing is known about John's childhood. However, His father was a vestryman in 1704. John was a land owner in St. Paul Parish, up the Pamunkey river from his father's holdings. John's neighbors included William Harris, Edward Bradley, Cpt Thomas West, James Terry, Lewis David, Mr. Munrow, Col. Walker, and Mr. Henry Fox. John may have acquired land from his father in law, William Overton, called "The Forest". This property is in the neighborhood of present day Kings Dominion amusement park. This John also witnessed a deed in 1737 from Manoah Chiles to John Smith. Another witness to this deed was Pat Henry. Pat's brother John was father to Patrick Henry.

John's Children according to this book's nomenclature

1. Anne Pettus (138) b.1702 d. 24 Oct 1736 m. Joseph Eggleston (was his second wife).

2. Thomas Pettus (139) b. 25 Dec 1712 d. 18 Mar 1780 in Lunenburg County VA m. Amey Walker on 10 Nov 1735.

3. John Pettus (140) b. 1716. m in 1755 (app) to unknown; father of Barbara Overton Pettus (182), who married Thomas Pettus (248) from a different line of Pettus'. This pair are then direct ancestors of William Walker Pettus (IV)

4. Lucy Pettus (141) b. 1718 (est) m. Chambers Humphreys.

Removed Dabney as middle name & Elizabeth Dabney as mother...
Warning: Check the data.
  • A child's birth date (Pettus-2 born 25 Dec 1672) should not be before a parent is six years old (mother Dabney-425 born 1668) .

its a middle name. How can you refute a middle name?

Pettus-2 and Pettus-63 do not represent the same person because: The kids are not right

Pettus-63 and Pettus-2 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate, same wife

Pettus-2 and Pettus-63 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicates

Pettus-381 and Pettus-2 appear to represent the same person because: there are multiple profiles for John or John Dabney or Dabney. Please let's get them merged.
Pettus-381 and Pettus-170 appear to represent the same person because: same names, same death dates. Not sure what source was used for the DOB. If this is the same John as on the SAR application, it shows his DOB as 1674.
Pettus-170 and Pettus-2 appear to represent the same person because: same parents. There are no sources for either; I doubt the parents had two sons both named Dabney. Please merge and provide a source or sources for the information. Thanks.
You are right, it is annoying, anytime i try to post one person someone changes it. So i'm at a stand still until we get more evidence.

This is really annoying. There are two daughters

Anne Elizabeth Overton born after 1673 m. John Pettus in 1702 Mary Elizabeth Overton born before 1673 m. Robert Anderson

Hi, I have different dates from Bill Pettus' book for this John (p125) Pettus: 1680 Blissland Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, USA d 1750 St, Martin, Parish, Hannover, Virginia, USA. I Have is father as John(p104), his father as stephen (p63), his father as Thomas 1598-1665. Caroline Feist manages the Pettus project on FTDNA. My Y111 and my cousin Rob's is listed above. Bill's Y111 intercepts us at John (p169) Pettus and Susannah Winston.

John Dabney is on my Paternal Y111 confirmed line. So I have autosomal DNA hits with folks listing Robert Anderson / Mary Elizabeth Overton ____and William Harris and Temperance Overton__ And no other family connections. I also have hits with William Overton and Mary Waters, and no others. Can Anne Overton be a daughter of William Overton (1638-1697)?
