Biography

Katherine Peverell was the younger daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Peverell, Esq. and his second wife, Margaret Courtenay.[1][2][3] Katherine was probably born in Cornwall, where her father held the majority of his lands. In the December 1422 Inquisition Post Mortem of her mother, Katherine is said to be aged 28 and more,[4] which would give her a birth date of 1394 or earlier.[1][5] Because Katherine was having children as early as 1402, the estimated age on the inquisition is problematic and, as Complete Peerage notes, was "undoubtedly underestimated" at the time.[3] A more likely estimate for her birth year would be about ten years earlier, in about 1384. See the research note below for a discussion on her estimated year of birth.

Katherine was contracted to marry Walter Hungerford, K.G., K.B., in October 1396[1] by Walter's father.[6] They were married by 18 September 1402, when Katherine and Walter had a papal indult for a portable altar.[3] Walter was the fourth but first surviving son and heir of Thomas Hungerford, Knt., and his second wife, Joan Hussey.[1][3] Katherine's maritagium included the manor of North Stoke, Oxfordshire.[1] They had four sons and two daughters:

On the death of Katherine's mother in 1422, Katherine and her sister, Eleanor (Peverell) Talbot, inherited the estates which had once belonged to their great-grandfather, John, Lord Moels. The Hungerfords’ share consisted of the manors of Halton, South Cadbury, Mapperton, Clopton, Wootton Courtenay and other property in Somerset, as well as half-shares in the manors of Plymtree and Sutton Lacy, Devon. In 1439, when Katherine's sister Eleanor died without issue, the Hungerfords inherited the remainder of the Peverell and Courtenay estates.[6]

On 14 June 1426, Walter had license to found a perpetual chantry at the altar of St. Mary in the parish church of Farleigh, for celebrations of the King, himself and his wife Katherine, and for the souls of his parents.[3]

Katherine was living on 12 November 1432 but had died before 15 November 1438, when her husband appears as married to Eleanor Berkeley, widow of John Arundel, K.B., Lord Arundel and Mautravers, and of Sir Richard Poynings.[1] According to her husband's will,[3] Katherine was buried in the "Cathedral Church of Salisbury, in the Chapel within the second arch from the belfry, on the north part of the body of the Church westwards, built to the honour of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin at my costs".[7] Her husband, Walter, 1st Lord Hungerford, died testate on 1 August 1449.[1]

Research Notes

Estimated Date of Birth

The ages of Katherine's children and their marriages indicate that their mother was born significantly earlier than 1394: her eldest son Walter was a knight fighting in the French wars when he was captured in 1429;[6] her second son Robert was likely of age in 1423 when he proposed a pilgrimage to the Holy Land,[3] Robert was said to be age 26 in 1439 and age 40 and more in 1449; and her daughter Elizabeth was married and having children by 1428. Katherine's husband, Walter Hungerford, was born about 22 June 1378,[1][3] and Katherine's birth year is probably closer to Walter's birth year than it is to 1394. Finally, Katherine, wife of Walter Hungerford, was aged 30 and more when she was named in the 1417 Inquisition Post Mortem of Katherine Widow of Humphrey Stafford Esquire,[8] pointing to a birth year of before 1387.

The birthdate (about 1394) seems too late, as her mother would have been about 52 years old (possible but doubtful). Also, 1394 seems late because she apparently started having children about 1402.

I think "about 1383" would make more sense, because her mother would have been about 41 years old in 1383, and Katherine would have been 16 years old when she was married in 1399.
