Research Notes

Aquia: An unsourced online tree had his birth location "Ocquia Parish, Westmoreland County" - no such place found. Sounds as if they were going for "Aquia" - the Peytons were affiliated with Aquia Church in Stafford County, Virginia. The church was established in 1667, three years after "Stafford County was established out of Westmoreland County and divided into two parishes, Overwharton and Chotank."[12]

Aquia was probably also the target for "Aquila Creek" (Aquia Church was named after the nearby creek[12]).

Death: The 1751 death year is from parish records for Dettingen Parish in Prince William County (replacing "Valentine Peyton Gent. Decd", as Vestryman on that date).[13]

Another Valentine Peyton, clerk of the court of Stafford County, is found in the Stafford County Order Book (1749-1755) after 1751.[14] The relationship of the two Valentines remains unclear, but in WikiTree, as of 29 November 2023, the profile attached as father of Robert (m Rush) represents the Valentine who is found post-1751 as clerk of the court for Stafford County & is attached to the profile for Frances Harrison:

Barnes: I deleted "(Ann's maiden name may be Barnes)" as no evidence of "Barnes" for the maiden name of Henry's wife/Valentine's mother was found. The profile for Barnes-3093 showed birth as 1760. She has been detached from Henry Peyton-16 as wife & from Valentine Peyton-15 as mother. ~ Liz Shifflett, June 15, 2015

  9. MG: I also know nothing about him.
  10. Son Robert's details are disputed:
    • According to Peyton Society of Virginia - son by Frances Linton, Robert Peyton (1725-1795 in WikiTree), m. Anne Guffey by 1765.
    • Based on dates/places - son by Frances Harrison, Robert Peyton (1745-1785), m Ann Rush by 1765 (based on same deed as the basis for Robert m Anne Guffey by 1765).
Robert's existence, and relationship to Capt. Valentine of Pr. Wm. is proved by one or more deeds which, I [MG] believe, I have already posted. (See this post on Robert and Ann (Rush) Peyton, and also this post on Valentine and Robert.)
  11. Many (including me) believed that Robert who married Ann Rush was the son of Valentine & Frances Harrison - a second wife of this Valentine named Frances. As of 2023, the Peyton Society of Virginia (PSV) has Robert m Rush as "FE-1", son of "Valentine1 Peyton (FE); of Prince William Co., Va.", head of the FE line, and Robert m Guffey as head of the P line, son of Valentine (d 1751), head of the G line/son of Henry Peyton (B-91), a descendant of Henry of Lincoln's Inn (head of the B line).

  13. The Valentine Peyton who was a Dettingen Parish vestryman died before 1 October 1751. From Mary Gregg's research (GenForum April 2000 post): "Valentine Peyton died in Prince William County, Virginia, between April 8, 1750, and October 1, 1751, as proved by the following Dettingen Parish records, from Records of Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, Virginia, 1745-1802 (Virginia Book Company, Berryville, Virginia).
    • "At a Vestrey (sic mg) held at Quantico Vestrey house the 8th Day of April 1750.Prsent:...Captn. Valentine Peyton...
    • "At a Vestrey held at Quantico Vestrey house the first Day of October 1751... Ordered that James Nisbet Gen. be appointed Vestreyman in the Roome of Valentine Peyton Gent. Decd."

Hi y'all! I've been knee-deep in Peytons this past week and I think I may have had a breakthrough...

I still don't know who the father of Valentine, father of Robert m Rush is, but I think that this Valentine's son John who married Seth Harrison is probably the John Peyton of Prince William County who represented the orphan Robert Peyton in 1761. In WikiTree, Robert m Rush is attached as son of Frances Harrison, and with John (son of Valentine d. 1751) married to Seth Harrison, it would make sense... At least it does to me. Does it to you?

Robert m Rush = Peyton-432 & Rush-556. His parents, Valentine & Frances Harrison = Peyton-221 & Harrison-2929.

John (son of this Valentine) & wife Seth Harrison = Peyton-667 & Harrison-209.

WikiTree Special:Relationship shows Frances as Seth's aunt.

Peyton-1174 and Peyton-15 appear to represent the same person because: Following info in Peyton-1174, I edited the attached profiles & now he can be merged with Peyton-15. Thanks!

Source cited is for the Valentine who married Frances Linton. I'll switch his wives.

I think that in order to get these various Valentine Peytons & their ancestry/descendents correct in WikiTree, we need to start including the source used by the soure - in other words, "Petyon's Of Virginia" as cited as source for this profile is not sufficient & there is nothing in the text of the profile to indicate the source of the information or why it applies to this Valentine.

And copying in a comment from his father's profile for consideration:

I think I've finally figured out part of the problem. According to the rtf file posted by Harold Davey of the Peyton Society of Virginia, there were two Ann Thorntons who married Henry Peyton - one in the 1600s and one in the 1700s. see http://vagenweb.org/stafford/groupsheets/HenryPeyton16563GenNarrDesc.RTF

this profile combines more than one Valentine, but is probably closest to Peyton-15

a word of caution about Peytons of Virginia book as source... I reviewed the book at the Library of Virginia to aid in my quest to identify the father of my Peyton ancestor (a Valentine Peyton) and found that it had information that has since been corrected by the Peyton Society of Virginia, but the copy at the Library of Virginia did not include any corrections/addendums. And the copy of the book available there included no sources for the information I was looking to verify.

fyi - i posted comments here so y'all (PMs) would receive them as e-mails. I spent a couple of days at Library of Virginia recently going over the microfilm of the Order Book that was returned by New Jersey in 2011 (had been taken from Stafford County by a Union soldier in the 1860s). That's where I found evidence of the second/separate Valentine Peyton, Gent., clerk of Stafford County up to at least November 1752.

I think I need to create a space page and move the comments/analysis there. I also have some images to upload. That's my project for week!

Cheers, Liz

Westmoreland County, from which Stafford County was formed, was served by Nomini Parish from the time Westmoreland county was formed from Northumberland county in 1653.

Conclusion - Westmoreland/Nomini/Stafford County (Overwharton Parish) Peytons are Henry->Henry->Valentine (gent./clerk of Stafford Co. died after 1752).

vagenweb.org/stafford/groupsheets/HenryPeyton16563GenNarrDesc.RTF - descendants of Henry b Westmoreland County, shows information for both the Stafford County and Prince William County Valentine Peytons all under Captain Valentine Peyton of Prince William County.

    • This article, published 14 August 1746, includes a piece submitted by, among others, Valentine Peyton, involving the sale of a house and land, mentioning vestries of Hamilton Parish and "Dettigen" Parish. (enlarged image)
