Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Peyton was a North Carolina colonist.

Disputed Title

Although some sources describe this William as the 5th Bt of Isleham, that is impossible. A Peyton baronetcy of Isleham was created in 1611. No Williams were in that creation, and the 5th Baronet, Sir Yelverton Peyton died in 1748. The last Peyton baronet of Isleham was also Sir Yelverton, 8th Bt (d. 1815). None of the other creations of Peyton baronetcies were of Isleham, and again, no William Peyton held the title in any instance.[1]

Having said that, Cokayne's Complete Baronetage (1900) does describe:

Sir John Peyton[2], Bart of Isleham, in this line the title and estate remained till 1776, when:
after the declaration of American independence the title was dropped.
The estate of Isleham, however, remained in this line till about 1830, when, the male line failing, it was sold for distribution among the female descendants of the late Baronet (by hereditary right) who died in that year.

In the same footnote in Cokayne, a couple of mentions are made of degree of descent and perhaps enough key index persons to ensure a pedigree fit, so it is possible that we might be able to demonstrate is that this William Peyton was the ostensible 5th in descent from a living baronet.[3]

Family of Origin

William Peyton was named in Robert Peyton (abt.1680-bef.1733), his father's, 3 Jan 1733 will..[4] His father was married to Mary.[5]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

In the Spring of 2020, the Peyton Society of Virginia genealogist, in conjunction with analysis by the FamilyTreeDNA Peyton Payton surname project administrator, approved the merger of William Payton m Mary Ribolt of the "HG" Line (see 2004 Peytons of Virginia book) into the 2004 Peytons of Virginia book "A" Line; that of the Baronets of Isleham, Cambridgeshire, England and Isleham, North, Gloucester (now Mathews) Virginia. Furthermore, despite the 2004 Peytons of Virginia book, there is no source for the 1760 birth date given of William Payton m Mary Ribolt, and we conclude it was an approximate date that became accepted as "fact". William Payton was born likely between 1745-1756, probably in Beaufort, North Carolina where his father another William Payton who was baptized 03 Jul 1718 Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., Virginia (parish register), was overseer of roads for a time and a landowner on the Pamlico River.
