Biography

Thomas and Margaret Bernard were married in 1438(2) and had three known children: Thomas, Grace, Margaret.

(Though I have been unable to discover so far what happened to the daughters Grace and Margaret) - there were probably other children who died in infancy as this couple could have been married for close on 20 years. Thomas's second wife Margaret Francis was first married to Thomas Garneys and he didn't die until 1458 their marriage therefore must have been after this. Question did any of those other children survive and could they account for some of the offspring Peyton families?

Although I think of Thomas as 'of Isleham' due to the tomb and brass for his burial there, he probably didn't live there until after 1468, as his father-in-law Sir John Bernard was still alive and after the death of his first wife Elena Mallory he took a second wife on his death he left this wife Isleham for the term of her life so it was only after her death that Thomas could take up the inheritance of his first wife (who was herself dead by then). In earlier references he is given as 'of Wicken'.

Research Notes

Thomas has previously been shown on WikiTree as father of Rose Peyton, with the relationship marked uncertain, a warning in her biography that it was unverified, and a link to a discussion in soc.genealogy.medieval.[1] There appears to be no good evidence for the relationship, or what Rose's last name at birth was, and she has been detached.

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Robert Peyton and Magna Carta surety baron Robert de Vere (MCA III:350-357 PEYTON) that needs development by the Magna Carta Project. If there are no objections, I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of this profile and will add a project box and project section to the biography. This profile still needs to be developed against the project's checklist. Thanks!

Is it possible that Rose Peyton Peyton-53 could be removed as a child of Thomas? This line is showing up in my Leete line and if there is no sourcing for her it's probably a good idea. They cite "

Clay, J.W. (1897). "Burgoyne," in Visitations of Cambridgshire 1575 and 1619. Publications of the Harleian Society, XLI, pp. 25. London" as her last name Peyton but that's it.

Thanks Traci!

Rose's profile has for some time had a warning saying her currently-shown parents are speculative, with reference in the bio to a discussion on soc.genealogy.medieval. I am detaching her, and adding research notes to relevant profiles in the standard way we do on these occasions.

History of Parliament (HOP) mentions the shift of the Peytons from southern Suffolk to Isleham ("just across Suffolk’s western border"), citing "the marriage of Thomas Peyton in 1484 to a Cambridgeshire heiress"... but that would be this Thomas, marrying his first wife (Isleham heir)... she died 12 Dec 1458. Notes on this page say of Thomas: "he probably didn't live there [Isleham] until after 1468".
