August, Pfalzgraf von Sulzbach (Count Palatine of Sulzbach), was born 2 October 1582 at Neuburg an der Donau, the second surviving son of Philipp Ludwig, Pfalzgraf von Neuburg, of the house of Wittelsbach, and his wife, Anna, Prinzessin von Kleve.
His father, perhaps in his will, divided the territory between his three surviving sons, and August received as his inheritance, Sulzbach (the castle, town and surrounding area), the castle of Rosenberg, the lordship of Breitenstein, a part of the balliage of Parkstein-Weiden, the castle and balliage of Flossenbürg and other areas. This division was settled in a document dated 7/17 June 1615, and August was recognised as ruler of Sulzbach on 22 August 1615. He is usually known by the title Pfalzgraf von Sulzbach (Count Palatine of Sulzbach).[1]
He married 12 July 1620, Hedwig, Duchess of Holstein-Gottorp, daughter of Johann Adolf, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and his wife Augusta, Princess of Denmark. She was born at Gottorp, 23 December 1603.[1]
